For years, fans have been clamoring for the return of Joss Whedon’s Firefly, a cult series that aired on Fox for a year before being abruptly cancelled. Since that time, we received a fun big screen movie – Serenity – and a terrific reunion panel featuring the likes of Whedon and stars Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau, but little else.
That changed yesterday, however, as Fox Digital Entertainment announced that it is hard at work on Firefly Online, a social role-playing game based on Whedon’s hit series. Currently in development for iOS and Android smart phones, the game will give you the opportunity to play as captain of a freighter similar to the one in the film, taking on missions and looking after your crew members. The game will also feature cross-platform support as well as customizable ships – in case you feel like a Reaver paint job.
The game is being developed by QMXi in conjunction with Spark Plug Games. Andy Gore, CEO of QMXi, stated, "At QMx, we know firsthand how great and powerful a franchise Firefly is and how mighty the Browncoats are. It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life for our customers in every way possible. The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures -- well, that's just too shiny for words."
You can watch the debut trailer below. Good luck trying to do better than Mal Reynolds, you scruffer.
