While news about the highly anticipated Final Fantasy VII remake has been mum for the past year, Kingdom Hearts III’s wrap up means that the team over at Square Enix can focus more solely on bringing Cloud’s journey into this generation. Though we don’t seem to be any closer to a release date reveal, we do have some exciting news regarding the addition of a co-director to work alongside Tetsuya Nomura.
Square Enix has been open about internal changes on the horizon in the past, and those changes include a little additional help for the upcoming remake. The new co-director has been named and Naoki Hamaguchi is more than up to the task. Previously the developmental lead for the Final Fantasy VII remake, Hamaguchi-san has taken on the role of co-director which is perfect considering the odd communication and developmental woes this remake has seen since its initial reveal back in 2015.
When the Final Fantasy VII remake plans were first unveiled during E3 2015, fans were excited to see Cloud face off against Sephiroth in stunning this-gen graphics. Unfortunately, there were a lot of bumps in the road for this team, including Nomura being tasked as both director for this game and for the very intense development process for Kingdom Hearts III.
Though Nomura has since admitted that they revealed the game far too early, it is good to see a co-director so intimately familiar with the process step up to the plate. Now that the progress for Final Fantasy is full steam ahead with the completion of the latest Kingdom Hearts, perhaps we might even see a release date confirmation at this year’s E3?
We can dream.
Knowing that the remake will be episodic as part of the game’s reconstruction in addition to key narrative changes to make it “more than just a remake” has made hype for this project unreal. With Sony bowing out of the E3 festivities this year, it will be interesting to see if Square Enix reveals anything at the expo, or if there will be a private reveal at a later date. Until an official confirmation, all we have are our dreams of that glorious one-winged angel to see us through the night.
