Epic Games Confirms Fortnite Impostors Mode Inspired By Among Us

Well, well, well.

After Epic Games rolled out a new mode in Fortnite called Impostors back in August, gamers were quick to point out the many similarities between the mode and popular indie game Among Us

The Impostors mode wasn’t an official collaboration with the Among Us team, and at the time, Epic wasn’t directly acknowledging the ties between the mode and Among Us.

Adding fuel to the fire, PuffballsUnited, co-founder of Among Us developer InnerSloth, said they’d been actively trying to reach out and collaborate with Epic Games. People were also pointing out how much cooler an official collaboration would have been in general, and it seems like Epic Games has taken this critical feedback to heart.

On Twitter today, there was an interesting interaction between the Fortnite and Among Us accounts that seems to suggest a collab between the two could be happening after all. The Fortnite account also confirmed that yes, the Impostors mode was inspired by Among Us.

Epic Games Confirms Fortnite Impostors Mode Inspired By Among Us

Back in August, we wrote a feature talking about why we felt Epic Games was in the wrong for how closely the new Impostors mode in Fortnite mirrored Among Us and how the situation felt similar to when Epic Games added a Battle Royale mode to the game that felt like it took ample inspiration from another indie at the time, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds.

Now, it seems like Epic Games is putting their hands up in a sort of “you got us” style tweet which the Among Us account responded to in a manner that suggests an official collaboration may be coming.

The first tweet from the official Fortnite account centers on an announcement about updates being made to the Impostors mode in Fortnite. Ahead of the update info, the tweet acknowledges the mode was inspired by Among Us and also tags the Among Us account.

Following this, updates to the mode were listed which include players having a better chance of getting the role they want (Agent or Impostor), along with an open voice chat playlist.

On its own, the tweet would mostly be notable for the admission that Impostors was inspired by Among Us – even though most of us knew this already. However, the Among Us account actually responds to the tweet and a short conversation ensues with the Fortnite account saying they have something to ask the Among Us account.

While the question itself isn’t shared publicly and we have no idea what’s going on behind the scenes right now, it seems like with Epic Games acknowledging Among Us as the inspiration behind Impostors that we may see an official Among Us collaboration in Fortnite after all. One that actually includes the Among Us devs this time.

Nothing has been confirmed just yet, but it seems like it’s worth keeping an eye on both the Fortnite and Among Us accounts on Twitter for details on a possible collaboration in the future.

Even if a collaboration doesn’t happen, it’s still nice to see Epic Games trying to make things right with the Among Us team by being transparent about the inspirations behind Fortnite’s Impostors mode.

Now that you’re caught up with what’s going on between Fortnite and Among Us, we’re curious to hear your thoughts on the matter. Are you happy that Epic Games has acknowledged the Impostors mode in Fortnite was inspired by Among Us? Are you hoping to see an official Among Us x Fortnite collaboration in the future?
