PlayStation 4? Pfffft, Donkey Kong is where it’s at.
Every year – well, at least for the past two years, anyway – players from across the world have come down to Denver to participate in the Kong-Off, a yearly tournament where players take on each other for glory in Donkey Kong competition.
Today, the Kong Off 3 has kicked off at the 1up “Barcade” in Denver, Colorado, running throughout the weekend. A number of competitors are taking part, including the stars of The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell, among other participants.
“Donkey Kong has always played a pivotal role in arcade culture, both historically and in modern times,” said Dr. Hank Chien, one of the yearly participants. “Historically, it was the grandfather of all Mario games and the reason why Nintendo exists today. It has always held a mystical status because of its “kill screen,” which was only known to have been achieved by one player for nearly 20 years.”
You can find out more details about the Kong-Off 3 here. It’s free to attend, so stop by and join the fun.
