Is DICE Interested In Adding eSports Support To Battlefield 4?

The company wants to support professional gamers in a big way…but it won't be easy.

Following the official reveal of Battlefield 4 from GDC last week, DICE is on a roll and pumping energy into the project before its proposed release later this year.  But it’s not about to leave the multiplayer component of its franchise behind, despite not showing any content from it last week.

In an interview with YouTuber Leutin09, studio general manager Karl Magnus Troedsson stated, “I can say that eSports is an area that we are very interested in.”

eSports, in case you’re unclear, is made up of professional gamers who play first-person shooters – and other games – competitively in tournaments, like MLG-sponsored events.

However, the process may not be as simple as “okay, you’re added”.  “It’s not as easy as some game developers like to think; that it’s just that you do A, X, Y and Z and everything is done.  It’s actually much bigger than that now,” said Troedsson.  “There are some people that actually see this as a new phenomenon and that’s not true either.  It’s been around for a long time.  It’s just recently that it’s really starting to take off…”

He feels that multiplayer has always been “very competitive” and “the heart” of the series, “and that won’t change moving forward.”

However, it doesn’t look like co-op will be a part of the game.  “We don’t have co-op in Battlefield 4.  We have made that decision.  We’re focusing everything we have on multiplayer and the single-player,” concluded Troedsson.

Look for more details on Battlefield 4 soon as it marches towards its later 2013 release.  In the meantime, watch the video interview here.
