The Mortal Kombat Kollection that remastered the first three games in the franchise may be cancelled, but it doesn’t mean we can’t still drool over what could have been.
Rumors have been circulating since 2017 about a possible collection remaster and who was attached to the project. Back in 2018, Blind Squirrel saw themselves at the center of the rumor mill for the Mortal Kombat Trilogy Remaster, and now the studio is confirming their role with the remaster – as well as its current status. The bright side is that they were also willing to share a few sneak peeks at what they were working on.
Blind Squirrel Games Concept and UI Artist Danny Huynh recently sat down with the team over at DSOGaming to talk about the now-cancelled project and what his particular role was. Huynh was charged with setting “the quality bar for the UI and FX while maintaining the look of the trilogy of the series.”
Under the name Mortal Kombat Kollection Online, the new remaster is said to have included a new mode called the Krypt mode. The UI designer shared that the Krypt mode was meant to offer a fresh new way to take on the trilogy for those looking to experience something new.
While we won’t be getting the Mortal Kombat Kollection Online, we do still have Mortal Kombat 11 to look forward to later this month. The latest in the fighting series will be making its debut on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, PC, and Nintendo Switch on April 23rd. For more on that game, check out the small preview below. You can also see a few more screenshots of the cancelled remaster as well:
“The all new Custom Character Variations give you unprecedented control of your fighters to make them your own. The new graphics engine showcases every skull-shattering, eye-popping moment, bringing you so close to the fight you can feel it. Featuring a roster of new and returning Klassic Fighters, Mortal Kombat’s best-in-class cinematic story mode continues the epic saga over 25 years in the making.”
