Cancelled ‘The Last of Us’ Movie Images Revealed

While it doesn't look like we'll ever see the cancelled The Last of Us movie, we do at least have these spiffy new photos to look at.

It seems that almost every month we’re learning of a video game movie adaptation. Even though many have yielded less-than-flattering results, that hasn’t stopped studios at trying their hand at the perfect film based on a game. We first learned that a The Last of Us movie would be the latest to try to break the movie adaptation curse back in 2018 but alas – it was not meant to be. The film was cancelled and for those that are bummed by the news, we do at least have a few images from the cancelled The Last of Us movie to see what could have been.

Honestly, the animated formula works and looking at the style of the below images? I, personally, would have loved to see this fleshed out more. Unfortunately, it just wasn’t in the cards, but at least we can drool over the very unique aesthetic regarding one of the best zombie experiences from this generation.

As reported by Nerd4.Life (via IGN), the animated short film was going to be made by the Oddfellow studio. The short film was only meant to be about 20 minutes long and its purpose was to retell the events of the first game before its highly anticipated sequel debuts this May.

“In anticipation of The Last of Us Part II, we were asked to create a compelling short film depicting that main characters Joel and Ellie as they retell their dramatic story chronicled in the original game,”  reads the studio’s description of this project.

They added, “Our proposal was to reinterpret each of the chapters of the game with a unique visual twist. Using singular narrative devices would allow us to bridge the styles and travel seamlessly between the past and present. Ultimately Sony decided not to move forward with this project.”

As for the game itself, The Last of Us Part II officially makes its PlayStation 4 debut on May 29th of this year.
