While running businesses is the core element of Nivalis Nights, there are plenty of Skills you can make use of to make running those businesses and completing quests more efficient and profitable in the long run. One of the most important is Fishing, and you’ll want to get a knack for it as soon as possible.

How to Unlock Fishing in Nivalis Nights

To unlock Fishing as a Skill in Nivalis Nights, you simply need to get your hands on a Fishing Rod of any kind, and there are two ways (or quests, rather) to go about it.

The first, and easiest, way is to seek out a man named Boardwalk Ady in the Docks district as part of the Underground Fish Market Quest. You’ll find him down on the ground level near the piers where you eventually unlock your boat. Speak to him and he’ll offer you a spare Rusty Fishing Rod for free, and anything you can get for free early in the game is a hot commodity.

Alternatively, you can also get one from Salt Pete during the Seafaring quest in the same area, which will also unlock your own free Boat (Thaddeus and his hookups) to use and sail around the city’s various water-level areas.

Fishing in Nivalis Nights is, thankfully, a pretty straightforward affair. First, to equip your Fishing Rod, go to your Inventory menu. Once you find your Fishing Rod, click the hand icon directly beside it to equip it, so it’s ready to use.

Next, find any open body of water and move your casting crosshair icon over it. You can technically cast your line anywhere, but obviously you want to do it where you can actually catch some plunder. When ready, cast your line into the water, and you’ll see a blue animated icon appear above your line.

This icon serves as a handy detection system for fishing, as it will change color according to the status of your catch.

Fishing Icon ColorWhat It Means
BlueYour line is cast and waiting for a bite.
GoldYour line has a bite.
GreenYour catch is successful.
RedYour catch has failed.

While you can fish anywhere, it’s best to focus your efforts at designated fishing spots, which appear as green circles with a green fishing rod icon floating above them. This guarantees you at least a few good catches, though what you catch can vary, depending on the quality of your Fishing Rod.

Starting out with the Rusty Fishing Rod means that you’re likely to catch more common types of fish along various submerged items like candle holders or old discarded computer chips. Normally you’d think to toss those kinds of items, but in Nivalis, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Ava will suggest holding on to whatever you catch and, if you don’t want to just hand it off to CorpSec, she’ll track down a good buyer for your fished up trinkets. Their name is Nabla.

How to Unlock and Use Your Boat in Nivalis Nights

Considering how expensive everything else is in Nivalis Nights, you’d likely expect a Boat of all things to be right up there in terms of price. However, Thaddeus ironically comes in clutch for you on this end, as you start the game with one for free. Not many Lowtown locals can openly brag about that.

To unlock the Boat in Nivalis Nights, you first need to find and talk to Salt Pete, whom Ava claims has been trying to contact you nonstop (likely thinking you’re Thaddeus). This kicks off the Seafaring Quest, which is integral to really getting you going on Fishing and unlocking more areas around the city such as The Stacks and The Sewers.

Take the taxi from Lowtown to the Docks district, and Salt Pete will be down at the piers. Speak to him and after some silly banter he’ll literally hand you the keys to the Boat, no strings attached. Granted, there will be more objectives to complete the Seafaring Quest, so we suggest nipping that in the bud before starting your fishing expeditions.

How to Track and Raise Your Fishing Level in Nivalis Nights

Fishing is one of your many available Skills in Nivalis Nights, and you can level it up to make your fishing expeditions more profitable. As the description suggests, “practice and patience” are the keys to leveling up, meaning the more you fish the more your stats will improve.

Your main stats for Fishing include your Scanner Radius (how far your scanner can detect fish), your Throw Range (how far you can cast your line), and your Luck (your likelihood of landing valuable catches). You can bolster these stats also by obtaining higher quality Fishing Rods, though they don’t come cheap, so time your upgrades wisely. Selling off your old rod first can help mitigate the cost.

All Fish in Nivalis Nights

Fish in this game have a distinct appearance rather than just a default shadowy silhouette, and you’ll often find them traveling in large schools in various watery areas around the city. The most important thing to keep in mind is that fish will only appear in specific locations and during certain conditions, including weather and time of day.

There’s a total 24 different Fish you can catch in Nivalis Nights, and they’re subdivided by tiers of rarity. Catching all three fish from one tier will give you information about fish in the next tier, so focus your efforts on filling one tier before going on to the next one.

There’s also an achievement tied to each of them, meaning that 24 of the game’s achievements can be earned by catching them all.

Below is a comprehensive list of all fish types in the game and their spawn conditions.
