How to Repair Your Sword in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Find a smith or use a Weapon Repair Kit to fix Geralt’s sword in The Witcher 3.

Whoops, You Broke it…

If you’ve been alive for a while, you’ve probably started to figure out that life isn’t perfect. Accidents happen and as much as we try to escape that reality through gaming, things can still go wrong in our virtual worlds. Sucks right? But don’t be dismayed, we have the answers you need to get your journey back on track in this Witcher 3 game guide!

Most things eventually break, even virtual items like weapons and armor in CD Projekt RED’s The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.  Geralt of Rivia can wield magic and slice monsters into lumps of bloody meat, but even this powerful warrior cannot prevent his sword from growing dull and eventually becoming useless. Considering you’ll encounter tough monsters like Golems, Griffins and Ice Elementals, you don’t want to begin the fight with a weakened blade. Besides, you won’t be able to complete quests that let you romance such beautiful women as Keira Metz, Triss Merigold and Yennefer of Vengerberg with poor, ahem, equipment.

This ultimately begs the question, how do you fix Geralt’s swords in The Witcher 3?

What To Do When Your Sword Breaks

First, you want to examine a sword’s condition. The more you use it the less reliable it becomes. When its condition gets dangerously low, an icon will appear on the game’s HUD (heads up display), indicating this weapon is in need of attention.

To repair a sword, visit a blacksmith.  Providing the smith possesses the necessary skill, he will restore Geralt’s blade to maximum effectiveness.  You will also stumble upon Sharpening Stones, which usually sit near a blacksmith’s place. In fact, a Sharpening Stone automatically appears on the map as soon as you walk within range. The same goes for Workbenches when you need to repair Geralt’s armor. Use these objects to receive a boost, preferably before tackling a difficult adversary.

Again, keep in mind that a low-level smith may not be able to provide the repairs you need.  Some only deal with common types of equipment, while others specialize in Masterwork items.

Besides, who wants to constantly go in search of a smith to repair Geralt’s weapons? That uses up quite a bit of time. If you prefer to deal with this task yourself, buy or craft a Weapon Repair Kit, which lets you increase a sword’s durability while away from villages; an Armor Kit serves a similar purpose for Geralt’s armor.

Furthermore, don’t carry one or two kits. Add several to your inventory before venturing forth through the Northern Kingdoms. You can buy them from merchants or craft these useful items after finding the necessary components.

To do the latter, you’ll need to find Repair Kit Diagrams in the world. An Amateur’s Weapon Repair Kit, for example, costs 11 Crowns to purchase, but to craft one, you’ll need one Elven Whetstone, Oil, and Leather Straps.  A Master’s Weapon Repair Kit, meanwhile, costs 62 Crowns, and to make one, you must have a Gnomish Whetstone, one Alchemical Paste, and one Linen.  The middle of the road is the Journeyman’s Weapon Repair Kit. This one costs 30 Crowns, or you can create it with a Dwarven Whetstone, one Bottled Water, and Leather Scraps.  If scavenger hunting doesn’t sound appealing, it’s easier to buy them.
