Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands Extended Look

Go to Bolivia and bring down the drug cartel.

Ubisoft is no stranger to trying new ideas with its popular franchises. Assassin’s Creed grew quite a bit over the past few years, introducing a new technical age with last year’s Syndicate, and Rainbow Six once again became a popular multiplayer favorite, thanks to the tactical-minded Siege.

Later this year, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon will get its turn, trading a futuristic look for something more wide open in the form of Wildlands.

First introduced this past summer during the company’s pre-show press conference, Wildlands promises plenty of action strewn across miles of multi-layered terrain in Bolivia, as you control a government operations unit known as the Ghosts, sent in to shut down the biggest drug suppliers in the area, the Santa Blanco cartel. It’s easier said than done, however, especially when your team learns how well connected the bad guys are with the local government.

Similar to previous Ghost Recon games, you’ll be able to assess technical data on your targets and then use your team to put together a strategy on how to invade. You could come in from above via parachute and clean house, set up a strike on the ground and hit them when they least expect it, or take the stealth approach and slowly take over the compound. How you assault is up to you and your team.

Along with the main story missions featured in the game, Wildlands also comes with a number of sub-missions, as you can talk with characters in one of the hundreds of smaller areas scattered throughout Bolivia. These include everyone, from local villagers needing assistance to Rebels in need of support to dictators who aren’t fond of Santa Blanco cutting into their business. With a wide-open sandbox terrain, there’s no shortage of stuff for you and your team to do.

However, you’ll want to make sure you tread carefully. There’s a reason why the cartel is so heavily feared, as they retaliate first and ask questions later. Your team’s actions could result in a village being destroyed or worse, and that’s a heavy burden to bear as you try to do the right thing.

The combat in Wildlands is similar to what previous Ghost Recon games had to offer, as you’ll want to use every tactical advantage you can find, from well-placed cover to special weapons that can help you clear out enemy forces. Other additions are being made as well, including the ability to grab a foe up close, while keeping a second hand free to fire your weapon at any buddies he may have around.

These skirmishes are part of what Wildlands’ massive world has to offer, as you can explore miles of Bolivia either on foot or in a vehicle. From the snow-capped foothills to the tranquil jungles, you’ll never know what you’ll find in each area – although trouble is most likely afoot, considering the cartel’s outreach in the country.

The weather and day/night cycles can also change the way you play. For instance, a raid during the daytime may be more difficult due to overwhelming forces on patrol. However, at night or perhaps during a downpour, your chances of success increase, due to the limited visibility on their end.

Wildlands offers the chance to battle enemy forces solo (with AI providing assistance), but up to four players can drop in and drop out at any time, so you can form a team with your friends if you feel like getting into combat. What’s more, you can also split up some sweet loot from enemies you wipe out, so you get paid for your troubles – which in turn can be used to unlock new gear and weapons for them to use, ranging from drones to high-tech weapons that can give you a superior advantage.

We still have not seen all the content Wildlands has to offer. Ubisoft is no doubt waiting until E3 time or during other shows to talk about gameplay features and new areas, but for now the game sounds promising. The co-op aspect should be fun, while the new surroundings and tactical advantages seem ideal for seasoned Ghost Recon players to master.

Ghost Recon Wildlands will debut on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC at an unspecified date.
