Soul Calibur 6 Details and Information

Find out the first details of the newly announced Soul Calibur VI.

Last night Namco surprised many by revealing the first official Soul Calibur VI trailer. Since that initial reveal (which you can see below), a few more Soul Calibur VI details have been released. This article covers what we know about the game including all known Soul Calibur VI information and any details on the game that we think would be interesting for longtime fans and series newcomers, most importantly a Soul Calibur VI release date when it’s announced. Obviously the game was just announced, so Soul Calibur VI information is limited and we don’t yet have a release date for the game beyond the 2018 general date, but we’ll continue to update this article as new information becomes available.

Story Details

Soul Calibur VI takes place in the 16th Century and will revisit the events of the original Soul Calibur title with a few bits of the Soul Calibur 2 and 3 story lines. Very little is known about the story beyond this fact other than Kilik and Groh being the main characters in the story (although all base roster characters can be played in the story mode). However, you can see several story-related cutscenes in the announcement trailer. Most of these come during the rapid cuts in the middle of the trailer, but you can see some of those stills here for yourself to get a better look at what was going on in the trailer.

Character Information

We already took a look at the characters we know for sure are in the new game. We don’t know what the Soul Calibur 1 story setting means for the cast of Soul Calibur V (especially the newcomers), but given the younger, Soul Calibur 1 designs of Mitsurugi and Sophitia in the reveal trailer, most believe the original cast will be back. If that turns out to be true, that would mean Taki instead of Natsu, Kilik instead of Xiba and essentially the return of the classic characters. It would be a shame to lose new characters like ZWEI and Patroklos. While Alpha Patroklos could potentially be replaced by Setsuka since they have the same moveset, the original version of Patroklos was a completely new character, just like ZWEI.

There’s also a new character shown off in the trailer (seen below), who has been confirmed to be Grøh, and fights with a weapon that can split in two. You can see the weapon Grøh is using, and a small portion of his outfit, but gameplay footage is available in a recent trailer for the game. So far, Ivy, Kilik, Nightmare and Zasalamel will join Mitsurugi, Sophitia and Grøh, alongside Geralt from the Witcher as a guest character. Recently, we’ve had reveals of Siegfried, Taki, Yoshimitsu and Maxi, with more expected to come very soon. At E3 2018 it was confirmed that one more brand new character would be added to the launch roster, with four DLC characters coming after launch, at least one of which will be another guest character. We expect new information on more potential guest characters, new characters and returning characters in the near future. We’ll be sure to update this article as soon as more details are known.

Gameplay Details

It’s been confirmed that Soul Calibur VI will still feature the gameplay elements that have become staples for the series. The 8-way run and ring-out mechanics are confirmed to be in Soul Calibur VI. In addition, armor breaking returns and can be seen in action by watching the gameplay trailer above. The meter system from Soul Calibur V also returns, as can be seen in the matches in the video below. There’s also a new technique known as the Reversal Edge that will be added to the game. Reversal Edge allows a player to read an opponent’s attack, then follow with a damaging counter. This sounds like a natural evolution of the Guard Impact system, which also remains intact and no longer requires meter like it did in SC5. Finally, there’s a new Soul Charge mode, which works similar to V-Triggers in Street Fighter 5. Once activated you character gains new abilities for a limited time.

Release Date

Bandai Namco confirmed that Soul Calibur VI will release on October 19, 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (via Steam). The release date was revealed at the end of the latest Soul Calibur VI Story Trailer that launched during E3 2018.
