Nintendo Switch 2 Performance May Not Match Current-Gen Consoles, New Documents Reveal

I just hope it isn't called the New Nintendo Switch Pro or something...

If you’ve spent any time online in the past few weeks, you’ve likely seen a variety of rumors and “leaks” flying around regarding the Nintendo Switch 2. 4K Resolution, DLSS, 60 FPS, and so on. The old saying “if it sounds too good to be true…” seems to apply here, especially considering a new set of details from a long-term game development studio.

Originally brought to light by Tom Warren from The Verge, it seems the Switch 2 is going to be a little more paired back from what our wildest dreams initially imagined. Current CEO of Activision, Bobby Kotick met with Nintendo developers regarding the next generation Nintendo Switch console in December 2022, and details about the new console were also recently unearthed from the Microsoft vs. FTC battle that continues to rage on.

While heavily redacted, some surprising information was found in the emails between Activision staff that detailed more information about the Nintendo Switch successor and its reported levels of power. According to the internal emails:

“Given the closer alignment to Gen8 platforms in terms of performance and our previous offerings on PS4 / Xbox One, it is reasonable to assume we could make something compelling for the NG Switch as well. It would be helpful to secure early access to development hardware prototypes and prove that out nice and early.”

While they did meet in December 2022, there is a chance that Nintendo has tried to beef up the hardware to make it more competitive with current-generation consoles within the first half of 2023. As we approach the eighth year on the market for Nintendo’s hybrid console, we can only expect to see more details emerge from the official source.

While we all love our Steam Decks and portable PCs here at Prima, there is something still so magical about Nintendo’s hardware, and we can’t wait to see what they have waiting for us. Will this console be the beefy powerhouse that some said during GamesCom, or will it fall more in line with this new report? Only time will tell at this point, but I’m getting antsy thinking about what Nintendo is going to bring to the table this time around.
