Shortly after you enter Guadosalam Rikku will take a moment to explain and make available weapon and armor customization, giving you nearly unlimited options to fine-tune your gear. Take a moment to play around with it a bit and explore Guadosalam, especially the houses where you can find the Al Bhed Primer Vol. XIII and a variety of other treasures. Once you are ready, follow the red marker on your map for a series of events culminating in Tidus’s Brotherhood sword receiving a substantial upgrade before headed north into the Thunder Plains.

Al Bhed Primer Vol. XIV

The Thunder Plains are a straightforward but infamous stretch of land where lightning strikes are a constant danger to travelers. Follow the instructions and whenever you see the screen flash press X to dodge the incoming lightning bolts as you head north toward the safety of another of Rin’s Travel Agencies. Inside speak with Rin and choose the top option to be given the Al Bhed Primer Vol. XIV then turn in for the night. If you are feeling confident about your dodging abilities as you travel throughout the area you can earn a huge amount of AP in a short time by hunting down and slaying the Qactuars, just be cautious of their counterattack which causes a guaranteed 1,000 damage exactly. Continue to the north to clear the Thunder Plains and you’ll find yourself in the Macalania Woods.

Al Bhed Primer Vol. XV

AL Bhed Primer Vol. XVI

Head north from the entrance of the woods to begin climbing the winding path and discover the unique mini-game of Macalania, butterfly catching.

When you reach O’aka and the next save sphere, open up O’aka’s shopping menu but don’t purchase anything for a unique opportunity to lower his prices! Also don’t miss the Al Bhed Primer Vol. XV on the ground nearby the merchant. Continue following the path and you will eventually encounter the strangest enemy yet.

BOSS ENCOUNTER: SPHERIMORPH

HP: 12,000

AP: 3,240

Gil: 4,000

Drops: Lv. 2 Key Sphere

Steal: Ether

Elemental Attributes: Variable

Make sure all your melee attackers are wielding non-elemental weapons before attacking Spherimorph as it can slow down the fight and make things difficult to keep track of. At any given point in the fight Spherimorph is weak against a particular element, but each time it is struck by its weakness Spherimorph will shift its weakness to another element. To make things even tougher, Spherimorph is immune to sensors or the Scan spell and the only way to discern its element is by which spells it casts. Spherimorph will also counterattack any physical attack made against it with its current elemental spell. Keep Yuna out to ensure the party’s health doesn’t drop too low and slam the boss with magic to eventually emerge victorious.

After the fight you will be given Jecht’s Sphere and a lesson on how to power up Auron’s Overdrive attacks. Moving forward brings you to another of Rin’s Travel Agency, with Clasko and the Al Bhed Primer Vol. XVI hanging around outside. Save at the save sphere and make any necessary adjustments to your equipment because things are about to get a bit rough

BOSS ENCOUNTER: CRAWLER & NEGATOR

HP: 16,000 (Crawler) 1,000 (Negator)

AP: 4,400 (Crawler) 220 (Negator)

Gil: 7,000 (Crawler) 300 (Negator)

Drops: Elixir (Crawler) Potion (Negator)

Steal: Lunar Curtain (Crawler) Hi-Potion (Negator)

Elemental Attributes: Crawler – 1.5x damage from lightning, 0.5x damage from fire, water and ice. Negator – 0.5x damage from fire, water and ice.

While the Crawler may be the big baddie of the fight you aren’t going to get much done with the Negator hanging nearby. This little machina negates any and all magic while it is around, including summons and should be your top priority. Cast haste on Wakka early in the fight to ensure he is able to eliminate the Negator quickly while Kimahri, Auron or Tidus target the Crawler itself. Once the Negator had been destroyed the Crawler begins a countdown to Mana Beam, a devastating attack that causes a large amount of damage and can eliminate multiple party members if you aren’t prepared. One of the best strategies is to attack as normal and when the Crawler is about to unleash Mana Beam, summon Ifrit or Ixion and have them guard the attack to absorb the attack for your party (if you’re lucky this will also fill their Overdrive gauge up for a painful counterattack). Keep an eye on the countdown and lay on the assault to destroy yet another Al Bhed Terror.

At last the party will reach Macalania’s Ice Temple. Save your game and head inside. Speak with the people standing around for the usual handful of free goodies and head inside to the Cloister of Trials for another challenge.

BOSS ENCOUNTER: SEYMOUR, ANIMA & GUADO GUARDIANS

HP: 6,000 (Seymour) 2,000 (Guado Guardians) 18,000 (Anima)

AP: 2,000 (Seymour) 290 (Guado Guardians) 2,500 (Anima)

Gil: 500 (Seymour) 300 (Guado Guardians) 3,000 (Anima)

Drops: Blk Magic Sphere (Seymour) Ability Sphere (Anima & Guado Guardian)

Steal: Turbo Ether (Seymour) Silence Grenade (Anima) Hi-Potion (Guado Guardian)

Elemental Attributes: None

You’re in for the long haul in this fight. Yuna, Tidus and Wakka all have unique trigger commands to speak with Seymour at the beginning of the fight and gain a slight power boost. Have Rikku steal the Hi-Potions from the Guardians at the beginning of the fight to negate their Auto-Potion ability then bring them down to start the second stage of the fight.

Once Anima has been raised, Yuna will have access to a mysterious new Aeon. Summon the aeon and use blizzard spells to heal yourself until your Overdrive gauge is full then unleash your Overdrive attack. Two or three overdrives should be enough to remove Anima from the equation and bring Seymous back to the front of the fight.

Dismiss your aeon as soon as Anima falls as Seymous has a unique attack that instantly destroys any summoned aeon. While not physically imposing, Seymour is an accomplished black mage and will start targeting your party members with multiple spells on each of his turns. Keep your HP high and use Auron’s magic break to reduce the damage Seymour can cause and before too long the fight will be over.

With Seymour defeated it’s time to take on the Macalania Cloister of Trials.

  • Head down the first hallway and move the Glyph Sphere from the central column to the nearby pedestal
  • Move the pedestal toward the nearby stalagmite and the ice will disappear
  • Push the pedestal toward the stalagmite to the north to make it disappear as well and send the pedestal down the ramp
  • Take the Glyph Sphere from the pedestal and place it in the slot to the far left to raise the floor and gain access to a Macalania Sphere.
  • Move the newly-raised Macalania Sphere from the upper floor and place it in the pedestal then push the pedestal to the right to lock it in place and restore some of the upper platform.
  • Take the Macalania Sphere from the far right of the upper room and place it in the column down below to restore the second portion of floor then move the Sphere near the ramp above to the column in the center of the upper floor to restore the entire tunnel.
  • Return to the tunnel and step on the switch to remove a portion of the floor and bring the pedestal with the Macalania Sphere up to the tunnel.
  • Remove the Macalania Sphere and push the pedestal down the ramp again. This time there is a glyph on the ground that will redirect the pedestal to a stalagmite containing the Destruction Sphere.
  • Head down the ramp and step on the switch below to move the pedestal and Destruction Sphere out of the stalagmite then place the Macalania Sphere you are holding into the slot on the far right to make the original stalagmite reappear.
  • Remove the Macalania Sphere from the central column to make another section of floor disappear and place it on the northern wall to restore the ramp.
  • Push the pedestal back to the lower floor and move the Destruction Sphere from it to the slot near the door to reveal the Temple’s treasure, a Luck Sphere.
  • Replace the Macalania Spheres to restore the tunnel again and head through it to make your escape.

During the ensuring chase, any Guado Guardians that touch you will initiate a fight with several enemies to take precaution to stay healed up as you make your way out. Once you’ve escaped, heal and save at the save sphere then prepare for the next fight.

BOSS ENCOUNTER: WENDIGO & GUADO GUARDIANS

HP: 18,000 (Wendigo) 2,000 (Guado Guardian)

AP: 2,000 (Wendigo) 300 (Guado Guardian)

Gil: 3,000 (Wendigo) 300 (Guado Guardian)

Drops: Power Sphere (Wendigo) Ability Sphere (Guado Guardian)

Steal: Hi-Potion (Wendigo & Guado Guardians)

Elemental Attributes: Wendigo – 1.5x damage from fire

Another fight with those annoying Guado Guardians! As before, steal their potions to weaken and remove them first. As they die they will cast berserk and several protective spells on the Wendigo to power it up but this can all be rendered ineffective against sleep. Since a sleeping enemy is only woken by physical attacks, using Wakka’s Sleep Attack to put the Wendigo out leaves you free to pound it with fire spells from Lulu. While it is awake use Power Break and Jinx to weaken its physical attacks and Threaten to remove the berserk status. When the Wendigo finally falls the party is finally free of the Guado and whisked away.

The Sanubia Desert is a sprawling, inhospitable wasteland full of tough creatures and tons of treasure. Your first priority will be reuniting with all your party members. With Yuna missing Rikku will likely become the party’s default healer by using the Al Bhed Potions scattered throughout the desert. If you’ve been collecting the Al Bhed Primers throughout the game so far you will be able to make use of the signs scattered across the desert, making navigation far easier and be sure not to miss out on the two additional Primers hidden in the third area of the desert. One of the primers is lying in the sand north of the save sphere and the other can be found to the northwest in the ruins of an old building. When you are ready to proceed, head north through the sand pits to reach the Al Bhed Home.

After meeting Cid, save at the save sphere and grab the Al Bhed Primer Vol. XIX lying nearby. After fending off the enemies, head inside and search the living quarters to find the Al Bhed Primer vol. XX on a bed and a handful of chests with passwords in Al Bhed that will require you to have found most of the Primers so far. Look in the corridor to the right of the save sphere to find the Al Bhed Primer Vol. XXI lying on the ground and when you’ve finished exploring the wreckage of the city follow the red marker to the airship dock.

Evrae(boss): 32,000 HP 5,400 AP 2,600 Gil | Drops: Blk Magic Sphere | Steal: Water Gem

Treasure

None

Take a moment to familiarize yourself with the airship and speak to everyone on board. When you’re ready to rescue Yuna, speak to the pilot and prepare for some battles aboard the ship before taking off then it’s time to head to Bevelle.

BOSS ENCOUNTER: EVRAE

HP: 32,000

AP: 5,400

Gil: 2,600

Drops: Blk Magic Sphere

Steal: Water Gem

Elemental Attributes: 0.5x damage from fire, water, lightning and ice

Without Yuna’s healing or aeons, Evrae is a true test of your strategy. The boss will change position from time to time getting either closer to the ship where Tidus, Auron and Kimahri can hit it or further away, forcing you to rely on Wakka and Lulu to deal damage. Cid will join you CTB list to the right and his turns are very important to monitor. When Evrae is close, Rikku and Tidus will both have a trigger command to have Cid pull away from the beast and if you can keep Evrae far from the ship long enough, Cid will fire a volley of missiles from the airship causing a large amount of damage. The best way to go accomplish this is to cast Slow on Evrae and Haste on the rest of your party, especially Rikku as she will likely be your main source of healing for this fight. Keep a close eye on the turn order and before too long Evrae will fall and you will find yourself in Bevelle, kicking off the finals chapters of the story with a massive wedding crash.
