Lego Dimensions: Inside the Playsets

The Simpsons, Ghostbusters and Jurassic Park coming to WB’s new Lego game!
This article is over 9 years old and may contain outdated information

Not intent on letting Disney and Activision have all the fun with their toy-based games, WB Games announced Lego Dimensions, where players build their own custom vehicles while interacting with characters from different franchises. There are a number of favorites to choose from, including Back To the Future, The Lego Movie and Lord of the Rings.

What kind of playsets and Fun Packs will be available when the game releases this September? We have a run down, with one or two figurines and two objects included in each set for $29.99. Solo character Fun Packs, meanwhile, cost $14.99.

(One thing to keep in mind — Lego Dimensions’ Starter Pack will come with three characters and one vehicle already, with all the scenarios from Wizard of Oz, Portal and more ready for play. These playsets basically add new characters and vehicles to the game, unlocking new abilities that can be used to find secret items and more.

Starter Pack: The initial Starter Pack, retailing for $99.99, comes with the Lego portal (along with a copy of the game), Wildstyle and Batman, along with a Batmobile vehicle and Gandalf from Lord of the Rings. This appears to be a Lego Movie-oriented play set, where you’ll recreate events from the popular film.

Back To the Future Pack: Great Scott! The events from Back To the Future unfold in the world of Lego Dimensions, with hero Marty McFly available, along with the DeLorean Time Machine and the Hoverboard. Scientist Doc Brown should be available separately, though he hasn’t been confirmed yet. Expect plenty of antics in Hill Valley with this set, along with the ability to transform the DeLorean into a hover vehicle.

Lego Ninjago: The popular ninja-based Lego line will appear in Dimensions, with two available ninja characters and two vehicles. Expect plenty of hack and slash action with these two, along with rides you can modify with interchangeable parts.

Jurassic World: Even though Lego Jurassic World received a separate release, dinosaur fans will have plenty to dig into with a special Dimensions pack that includes a Gyrosphere (which can be modified), a tall Raptor-like figure and two characters from the film, including Chris Pratt’s Owen and a secondary worker. No word yet if content from the previous game will be included in Dimensions, but chances are it’ll focus on new sections of the park.

Scooby-Doo!: Gee, Scoob, better head back to the Mystery Mobile! The Scooby-Doo! set will offer plenty of nostalgic fun for fans of the show, featuring both Scooby and Shaggy, along with a model of the Mystery Machine and what appears to be a large stack of food. We’re not sure what aspect the food will play in the set, but it’s sure to come in handy as the duo go up against enemies.

Portal 2: There are no exploding lemons, sadly, but the Portal 2 play set looks intriguing, complete with a modifiable turret droid, a Companion Cube perched on a stand and Chell, complete with portal gun. We’re crossing our fingers Atlas and P-Body receive figures so we can play with them while exploring Aperture Science.

Doctor Who: This level pack features a version of the latest Doctor (based on the TV series’ Peter Capaldi), as well as a dog-shaped droid and a facsimile of the infamous police booth. No other characters have been revealed, but you can probably expect a few troublesome Daleks to stand in the way of the good Doctor. “Exterminate!”

The Simpsons: D’oh! Homer Simpson and company return to video games after being away for a few years. Along with a Homer figurine (complete with donut in hand, of course), players also receive a copy of his pink car and television. We certainly hope the Power Plant appears in the game.

Ghostbusters: When there’s something strange and it don’t look good, who you gonna call? WB Games hasn’t unveiled all of the details behind this play set, but we expect a couple of Ghostbusters to show up (possibly Venkman and Spengler), along with Slimer and the ECTO-1. For now, we’ll cross our fingers the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man becomes playable.

Midway Arcade: Another set shrouded in mystery, the Midway Arcade will appeal to nostalgic video game fans of the older arcade titles. We’d love to see the Interceptor from Spy Hunter, the Warrior and Valkyrie from Gauntlet and the mountable bird from Joust.

Lego Chima: If you’re a fan of the Chima series, you can expect a number of favorites to make a return.

DC Comics: The DC Universe won’t be limited to Batman’s antics. Superman is slated to make an appearance as a playable character in the game with a separate pack, along with Cyborg and Wonder Woman, among others. We hope DC expands the universe for the game, including the likes of The Flash, Arrow and the Joker. We’d also happily take a Suicide Squad set, with the movie due for release next year.

Look for more coverage of Lego Dimensions in the months ahead. In the meantime, take an in-depth look at the Starter Pack.
