Time to parry the fish, said no one ever.

Viva La Dirt League is one of the most successful YouTube gaming channels in the world, and its foray into the video game industry seemed inevitable, given its awkwardly hilarious humor.

I’m a casual fan of Viva La Dirt League, but their NPC RPG skits were some of my favorites. They devised a game that perfectly rolls up years of comedic sketches into one… fishing game.

Nice Day for Fishing Isn’t Exactly Fishing and That’s What Makes It Hilarious

People who haven’t seen a single Viva La Dirt League skit or are unaware of the Epic NPC Man may think that this is just some boring fishing game. It is quite far from it. The Epic NPC Man’s whole shtick revolves around what it is like living in an MMORPG, but humanizing it. That’s what their humor revolves around, so in a fishing game, you’ll get just that.

You’ll “fish” or battle some of the most otherworldly creatures, beating an undead Lich Lord, a vicious Kraken, and even an evil magical seahorse with just yer trusty ole fishin’ rod.

Every otherworldly creature fighting Baelin and his friends adds to the humor that Viva La Dirt League is mostly known for.

The game is immensely deep in terms of content, giving you many types of fish to catch, spells to unlock, gear to discover, and much more. Honestly, it does feel like your typical RPG, but much more polished and packed full of Viva La Dirt League’s comedy and hijinks.

There will be some who aren’t fans of the gameplay loop because it revolves around a very specific combat loop (fishing mechanics) and finishing quests, and that’s basically the essence of the game.

You’ll catch stronger and stronger fish with minute differences in mechanics, but you’ll get to play with all sorts of gear, spells, and items to use in battle.

As Someone Rarely Drawn to Dialogue, Nice Day for Fishing Drew Me to Its Narrative

Before getting into the game, I knew I had to pay close attention to the story of Baelin becoming the hero of Honeywood, but that’s because I already watched a few sketches involving the Epic NPC Man by Viva La Dirt League. The comedy won’t hit as hard if you aren’t aware of their skits, such as an NPC giving a typical NPC reply or a quest giver sending you repeatedly to do the most mundane RPG tasks.

To someone unfamiliar with the sketches, it might look somewhat dull, but to someone who has watched some of them over the years, it was a hilarious and unique experience.

In some weird way, it felt like I was playing Portal, but instead of solving puzzles with an ultra-sarcastic AI (GLaDOS), I was on an adventure with many awkwardly hilarious townspeople.

I simply love the offbeat narrative, silly quips, and the dastardly fishing mechanics. The game is an absolute masterpiece; the only fish being hooked here is you.
