Four Reasons Minecraft Wii U Edition is a Big Deal

Minecraft will make its Wii U debut later this month!

Nintendo fans have reason to celebrate this morning because Minecraft is finally coming to the Wii U.  Maybe it’s a few years late, but Minecraft Wii U Edition will still make a huge impact on the system, to the point where we expect to see it somewhere in the top 10 games list for months to come.

First up, the details. Minecraft Wii U Edition releases worldwide on December 17 and will cost $29.99 in the U.S. This is roughly $10 more than other console versions of the game, but you will receive the following six packs: Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts 2 Skin Pack, Natural Texture Pack, City Texture Pack, Fantasy Texture Pack and the Festive Mash-up Pack.

Additionally, players will be able to enhance the experience with 16 expansion packs, all of which cost money to download from the eShop. These include the following: Festive Skin Pack, The Simpsons Skin Pack, Doctor Who Skins Volume 14, Doctor Who Skins Volume 25, Star Wars Classic Skin Pack, Star Wars Rebels Skin Pack, Star Wars Prequel Skin Pack, Mass Effect Mash-up Pack, Skyrim Mash-up Pack, Plastic Texture Pack, Candy Texture Pack, Cartoon Texture Pack, Steampunk Texture Pack, Pattern Texture Pack, Greek Mythology Mash-up Pack, Halloween 2015 Mash-up Pack. More packs will appear at undisclosed times.

With that out of the way, we have four reasons why Minecraft Wii U Edition will captivate gamers around the world. You know, aside from Minecraft being one of the biggest video games of all time!

Perfect for MiiVerse

MiiVerse is one of several features that make the Wii U special. It’s a place where fans come together to share their experiences through art and messages. Combine this with Minecraft and expect to discover an excited community of gamers eager to share their creations through detailed sketches. It will be one of the most active MiiVerse communities, hands down.

Multiplayer Focused

Players can still explore and build solo, but Minecraft Wii U Edition also comes with four-person splitscreen play offline, and then eight-player online support. How Nintendo plans to handle online communication remains to be seen, but at the very least gamers will be able to meet up with friends to build and fight enemies.

Off TV Support

Minecraft is near unbeatable on smartphones and tablets.  People love taking the experience on the go, and while the Wii U GamePad has limited range compared to an iPhone 6S, it’s nice to know we’ll be able to continue building when someone else wants to use the TV.

Nintendo Crossover Packs… Maybe

This is pure speculation, but considering the already announced Mash-up Packs (Star Wars, The Simpsons, Mass Effect), perhaps Minecraft developer Mojang will collaborate with Nintendo to bring downloadable content inspired by classic franchises like Mario, Zelda and perhaps even Metroid to the game.  Doing this would set the Wii U Edition apart from other versions of Minecraft because of the exclusive content (you’d never see a Mario pack on another platform, for example), and it would provide users with even more possibilities for building worlds and cool things in general. Imagine Hyrule Castle in Minecraft, complete with scenery and characters inspired by Ocarina of Time. Granted we don’t know if this will happen, but there’s no denying the potential.

Update: Nintendo and Mojang will collaborate on exclusive content, but there are details at this time.
