Our second Spotlight Hour of December 2022 is almost upon us in Pokémon GO, and this time, the Clap Pokémon is the featured pick. This isn’t the first time Spheal has had some personal recognition, and many Trainers are likely wondering if the sphere-shaped seal can be shiny or not.
As always, these Spotlight Hours are a weekly occurring event and they are a fantastic chance to get some shiny additions to your collection. However, not all Spotlights feature a shiny form like some of the other events in Pokémon GO, like Community Days. Keep reading below to see if that holds true for shiny Spheal as well.
Pokémon GO Spotlight Hour – Can Spheal be Shiny?
Good news for fans of Walrein, there is a chance for shiny Spheal to spawn in Pokémon GO. As of January 2021, when the Clap Pokémon had a Community Day, the purple shiny form became permanently available for all Trainers to try and collect. That means you have a chance for a shiny Spheal on December 13 at 6 pm local time when the seal appears all over the wild in the weekly Spotlight Hour event.
These featured Spotlights end quickly, though, and they don’t have as many bonuses, so you’ll need to make the most of the time you have. The event only runs from 6 pm local time to 7 pm local time, and there are no bonuses to shiny spawn rates. That means about every 1 in 500 Spheal encounters will have a shiny, if you’re lucky.

Your best bet as a Trainer is to head to a populated location with plenty of PokéStops in the area. As you walk around the many potential spawns, make sure to have an Incense Lure going and some Lure Modules placed at the PokéStops around you. Then you can save some time by tapping on every Spheal you see to start an encounter. If you don’t see shiny Spheal with some purple immediately, move on to the next one.
There is no need to make a catch in Pokémon GO for this event unless you want some candies for your Walrein. Considering Walrein is one of the best picks to have in the Great League for PvP, it’s not a bad idea to stack up on some extra candy when you need it most.
