Best Games on Itch.io Ranked

The wonderful world of Indies

Aren’t indie games great? The idea of fans creating and publishing their own games without the burden of the industry, publishers, and the like has brought us some really outstanding and original titles. Although in the indie self-publishing world there is a lot of plagiarism, unfinished titles, and similar “achievements” of debatable quality, from time to time something really great appears. On this occasion, we will take a look at the top-ranked games from the indie games hosting portal Itch.io to see what the players from this website consider the best of the best when it comes to indie games.

Check out the list below to see the TOP 5 best-ranked titles on indie games portal Itch.io

5. Butterfly Soup

It is a visual novel about gay Asian girls playing baseball and falling in love. Swear to God I didn’t make this one up! It’s a thing, certainly, it exists and it is the 5th best-ranked game on Itch.io. You can play it for free here – the story is actually pretty funny with a feel-good vibe.

4. Friday Night Funkin’

It came from the Newgrounds! It’s the “coolest rhythm game” ever, as the authors self-proclaimed. The only old-school entry on our list today, that still manages to rank high on Itch.io. This is the game you definitely saw on YouTube and in memes on Reddit, it’s like a freestyle hip-hop battle crossed with Dance Dance Revolution and Vocaloid sounds. If you understand what I just wrote – you know you have to play it.

3. Adventures With Anxiety!

Here is a nice but also very helpful story-driven adventure that you can play directly on the site in your browser or on your phone. It is a game that is created to help anyone who has problems with anxiety. Video games that help stabilize mental health? Hell yeah!

2. HoloCure

It’s a free fan-made game where you play as… virtual YouTubers?! From the Hololive channel? The action in this pixel art game is most reminiscent of games like Vampire Survivors (check out extensive coverage). You can download it for free from the following link.

1. Our Life: Beginnings & Always

Well, what to say about this one? People play games for many reasons. Some like action and tough challenges, and some like visual novels that are made to make them feel better. Our Life: Beginnings & Always is something like a Boyhood movie only in anime visual novel format, where you follow the entire life of the anime character you create, through growing up and everything that goes with it. To quote the authors – “(Our Life) is a feel-good simulation, as well as a “feel-better” one, where painful emotions such as sadness, anger, stress, and worry can all be expressed, then met with reassurance, understanding, and support.” The game is free to play, but it contains the paid DLC.
