Blizzard Announces Cross-Play For Overwatch On All Platforms In New Developer Update

Blizzard has officially announced today that Overwatch will have cross-play coming soon. A feature requested since the beginning of time itself. This will now allow you to play the game with your friends and family on other platforms.

This, however, does not mean cross-progression is in the game. So if you switch over to a different platform, your cosmetics and level will not carry over. This does mean though, you don’t have to rebuy the game on another system just to play with friends on a competing platform.

We’ve seen crossplay become far more common over recent years with games like Fortnite, Rocket League, and even the recently released Knockout City. 

Cross-play has become a standard among multiplayer games, and it’s about time Overwatch joined the fray. This announcement was made alongside a developer update with Aaron Keller.

Cross-play will be available across all platforms. That includes Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and PC. 

In order to participate in cross-play, you’ll need to make a link to a Battle.Net account if you haven’t already.

Competitive Play will not allow you to have a mix of PC and console players in the same party; however, it will enable you to have cross-play between consoles. This is because the matchmaking pools for these modes are separate. 

There is no current ETA on when cross-play will be released for players to try out, but it sounds like it’s not far off.
