Dragon Quest Tact Strategizes on Mobile in 2021

It's called "Tact" because the homicidal monsters are always smiling :)

Square Enix has been pushing its non-Final Fantasy brands a lot lately, even bringing mobile games like Romancing SaGa Re;universe and Dragon Quest of the Stars to the west. While a popular game in Japan to this date, Stars was several years old by the time it made it to localization. But Square Enix has announced a new mobile game seeing a global release, and it’s practically brand new. Combining elements of tactics strategy and monster collection, Dragon Quest Tact is coming to iOS and Android in 2021.

Dragon Quest Tact is a follow-up of sorts to 2009 DSiWare game Dragon Quest Wars. Developed by Tose and Intelligent Systems, Dragon Quest Wars was a smaller-scale tactics game that had a more puzzle-solving feel. Dragon Quest Tact, developed by Aiming (Caravan Stories), is much more of a complete package, with a story, tons of monsters to collect, and a more fleshed out (but still grid-based) combat system.

And since it’s a free game, yes, you can expect to see gacha mechanics in Dragon Quest Tact. Naturally, in a monster collecting game you’ll be using your premium currency to pull for more rare and powerful monsters. But it also seems like you get monsters from playing the story as well. Games like these dole out premium currency for free all the time, so even if you don’t want to pay you can probably build a solid team. Of course we’ll learn more about the deeper mechanics when the game launched – when a mobile game goes global they don’t always share the same exact structure as the original, so hold off on analyzing the Japanese version!

If you have access to an Android platform, Square Enix is running an early access beta test period, which is exclusive to Android users. iOS users will have to wait for the full launch, which is slated to start “soon.” The full launch is planned for early 2021, but you can sign up for potential beta access for Android right now.
