Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Game Modes – What We Know so Far

6v6, 12v12, and more.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

Treyarch took to the internet on September 9, 2020, to officially reveal the multiplayer gameplay for this year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. Obviously there is plenty of information that hasn’t been released yet, but we did get a pretty high level look at what Cold War’s multiplayer suite has to offer. This includes a list of game modes you can expect to see return, as well as multiple modes that are being introduced for the first time.

All Revealed Game Modes for Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Multiplayer

After the stream, Treyarch updated its official website to go a bit deeper into what Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Multiplayer entails. For starters, the usual Call of Duty 6v6 gameplay isn’t going anywhere. The standard modes you’d expect will still be available, such as Team Deathmatch, Domination, Hardpoint, Free-for-All, Kill Confirmed, and Search & Destroy. That list of modes was confirmed by name. Control, a competition-oriented mode introduced in Black Ops 4, is also confirmed for Cold War.

Treyarch briefly confirmed that new modes would be coming to Black Ops Cold War post-launch, which tracks with the series other post-launch activity, with Season releases usually introducing new ways to play. On top of that, three new modes will be debuting in the game on launch day. These new modes are VIP Escort, Combined Arms, and Fireteam.

In VIP Escort, two teams of six work to take down or defend a player designated as the VIP. This player will only have a pistol, one smoke grenade, and access to a Spy Plane. The VIP’s goal is to reach one of two possible extraction points, and the round ends if they’re killed. The round will also end when a team is totally taken down. To that end, there is a small period when a player is “downed” that will let teammates revive them.

Combined Arms is a much bigger, 12v12 mode. But not only is this a larger firefight, it’s also a mode that combines infantry gameplay with vehicles. Some of the vehicles available in this mode will be Snowmobiles, Dirt Bikes, Gunboats, Wakerunners, and Tanks. There will be more than that, though.

Fireteam is a more ambitious game mode, as it’s actually a new category as described by Treyarch. These games will see ten teams of four competing against each other to complete a series of objectives across larger maps than usual. The variant shown during the stream was called “Dirty Bomb,” which involves detonating a chemical weapon, then navigating the rest of the mission in a contaminated space.

For now, that’s what we know about what game modes will be available in Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. From the traditional modes to the ambitious new ways to play such as Fireteam, Black Ops Cold War seems to be jam-packed when it comes to multiplayer. We’ll learn more as the beta testing phase kicks off in October, but for now you can check out the official website and video packages.
