Minecraft: How to Make a Compass

If you're directionally challenged, then you're going to want to know how to make a compass in Minecraft. Here's a quick rundown.
This article is over 4 years old and may contain outdated information

There are a lot of useful items to craft in Minecraft, but if you’re directionally challenged like me, then a compass is going to be among the most important. With a compass in Minecraft, you will no longer have to worry about not being able to find your way back home, as the needle will always point you back in the right direction. In this guide, we are going to look at how to make a compass as well as where you can find one.

How to Make a Compass in Minecraft

Like most items in Minecraft, you’ll need to combine a few different materials if you’d like to craft a compass. Specifically, you’ll need to collect four Iron Ingots and one Redstone. Once you have those materials in your inventory, follow the steps below to make a compass.

  • Open your Crafting Table
  • Place the Redstone in the middle of the grid
  • Place the Iron Ingots on the top, bottom, and both sides of the Redstone (see image above)
  • Move the Compass from the Crafting Table into your Inventory

There you have it, you’re very own compass! From now on, if you’re ever lost, you can use the compass to point you back home. If you don’t know how it works, let me explain. The needle is always going to point back to your spawn point, which is where you’ll go if you die. So if you’ve just started a game, it’s going to point to some random location, but once you have built a bed and have slept in it, that will be your new spawn point. So if you get lost, your compass will point you back to your bed, which is hopefully inside your house!

If you don’t have the items that we mentioned above, here’s a quick rundown on where to find them. Iron Ingots are the product of Iron Ore, which can be found in most underground areas. So simply get some Ore, head to a furnace, and smelt the Ore to turn it into an Ingot.

Unfortunately, Redstone is going to be a little harder to find, as you’ll need to mine it from the bottom 16 blocks of the world. This means you’re going to have to dig down pretty far. Further, it can only be collected with an Iron or Diamond pickaxe. It’s worth noting that Redstone can also be bought from Villagers and dropped by Witches.

If you don’t feel like going through all of the trouble required to make a compass in Minecraft, you can also buy it from Librarian Villagers or even find it in a few places throughout the pixelated world. Below are all of the places that you’ll have a chance of finding a compass in Minecraft:

  • Shipwreck Chests
  • Strongholds
  • Villagers

Once you’ve finished finding or crafting a compass, you can start on your next project. Below are some of our other Minecraft guides that we think you’ll like:
