There are dozens of animals and creatures in Atlas. Skilled survivors will eventually want to know how to tame each type of animal to acquire new animal companions. Taming can be a bit of a complex process in Atlas, so we’ve put together this guide on how to build your own taming pen so that you can start taming animals the right way.
How to Make a Taming Pen
Although Atlas shares many similarities with Ark: Survival Evolved, there are some tasks that don’t directly translate over between the two games, taming being one of them. If you’re looking to tame predatory animals such as wolves, bulls, tigers, or even bears, you will need to craft yourself a taming pen to get the job done.
The goal with the taming pen in Atlas is to trap a wild animal or beast inside so that you can damage the creature from outside the enclosure, just enough to knock it out. You won’t have tranquilizers to rely on, so Atlas’s Bola taming system is the next best method for taming defensive or aggressive animals.
There are a few details you’ll need to consider when building your taming pen. Consider the size of the animal or creature you want to tame, as you’ll want to ensure that the pen is big enough to fit the animal inside. You will also need to make a bigger gateway so that you have enough space to lure the animal inside before enclosing it in the taming pen. Lastly, make sure you add a door to the back of the pen so that you can easily leave the pen after trapping the animal.
You’ll also need to make a few openings, such as windows or a roof, so that you can reach through to essentially hurt the animal from the outside in order to tame it. You will also need to craft Bolas using the Loom so that you can trap the animal and feed it food. You will need to repeatedly feed the creature its preferred food type in order to tame it, so make sure you have some food on hand as well.
How to Tame Animals in a Taming Pen
When the animal’s health gets below 20% while in the taming pen, you should be able to use the Bolas to knock them to the ground and begin feeding it. You may have to repeat this process several times until the anima’s taming meter is fulfilled. Once the animal is tamed, you will be able to give them a name. Make sure to regularly feed your tamed animal, otherwise they can become un-tamed over time.
With a taming pen, you should be able to tame some of the more aggressive animals in Atlas to keep them as your pet. Keep in mind that Atlas is still in early access, which means some of the details of the taming process could change down the line. We’ll be sure to keep you up to date if that’s the case.
