How to Tame and Breed Animals in Hytale

Looking to start up your own peaceful farm with friendly animals and pets in Hytale? Here’s everything you need to know about how to catch and tame animals in Hytale.
Can You Tame Animals in Hytale?
Hytale does not currently have a dedicated animal or pet taming system. Taming, Commands, Pets, and Breeding are not features currently in the game. However, the devs have stated that they will be added with future updates. The current taming mechanics are, at best, partial, as animals can become tolerant of your presence under the right conditions. Currently, the only reason to ‘tame’ animals is either for eggs, shearing, decoration, or the occasional horse ride.
How to Capture Animals in Hytale
Use Capture Crate to Catch Animals
The Capture Crate is the best way to safely capture and move small animals. You can craft a Capture Crate at the Farmer’s Workbench for 4x Any Wood and 50x Essence of Life. Once you craft it, equip it to your quick slot and left-click a small or baby animal.
Animals that fit in a Capture Crate include:
- Rabbits (all sizes)
- Calves
- Lambs
- Foals
- Baby pigs
- Frogs
- Mice
Adult animals, such as grown horses, cannot be captured with the Capture Crate. You can carry captured animals around and release them with left-click at a fenced enclosure.
If you place captured animals inside a fenced enclosure, they will not try to escape. You can build fences by using any type of Log at the Builder’s Workbench. Make sure the enclosure is at one height, and you should add a gate.
Tame Captured Animals With a Feed Bag
The Feed Bag calms animals near it, and you can craft it at the Farmer’s Workbench for 10x Wheat, 5x Vegetable, 5x Fruit, and 10x Essence of Life. Place the Feed Bag inside the enclosure with captured animals and leave them undisturbed for one in-game day. Heart Icons should appear above the animals, and they’ll become friendly and accustomed to your approach.
Note that recapturing a tamed animal can reset it to its wild state. Tamed animals will not follow you, and they cannot currently breed. You can shear sheep with the Shears, and Chickens will lay eggs in the Chicken Coop inside their enclosure.
How to Ride Horses in Hytale
Where to Find Horses
Horses spawn in small groups and can be found in the Emerald Grove and Savannah regions of the Howling Sands in Hytale. Horses are currently the only rideable animals in Hytale.
How to Mount a Horse
To mount a horse, crouch and approach the horse carefully, and press F when close enough. Then you can use WASD to ride it in any direction. There is no taming mini-game, no saddle, and no ownership. Horses are temporary wild mounts, and once you dismount, they usually try to run away. Using a Feed Bag nearby makes mounting far easier and avoids chasing. You cannot build while riding a horse.
Can You Breed Animals in Hytale?
No, you cannot breed animals in Hytale as breeding mechanics are not implemented in Early Access. This includes horses, cows, pigs, sheep, and chickens. Even structures like chicken coops currently do not function as intended.
