Personalities have always been a big part of Digimon’s core Digivolution mechanics. In Digimon Story: Time Stranger, it holds the same importance as some of the previous titles, but is quite harder to alter.
In this guide, we’ll cover what it takes to change a Digimon’s personality and how you can get results as fast as possible in DSTS.
How to Alter Digimon Personalities in Digimon Story Time Stranger

There are four core personality types: Valor, Philanthropy, Wisdom, and Amicability. You can even find these core personalities in your Agent Skills page as Bonds.
Each core personality is divided into four other personality types that a Digimon could possibly acquire, giving 16 possible outcomes for a Digimon.
Using the same chart, you can also see four core values: Affection, Heart, Understanding, and Companionship, which brings us to one of the first ways to change a Digimon’s personality.
When you interact with a Digimon in the open world or the Digiline, your interaction may alter their personality, depending on these four values. You can tie a direction to one of the core values to help you understand how the personality could shift based on the chart.
Affection -> Up; Heart -> Right; Understanding -> Left; Companionship -> Down
If your response was leaning toward Understanding, their personality could shift more to the left than their current personality. For example, if a Digimon has an Opportunistic personality and you respond with an Understanding dialogue, the personality could only shift to the Sly personality. Use the chart as a reference.
However, talking to Digimons isn’t the most effective way to change their personality. You’ll have to use the DigiFarm for that.
In the DigiFarm, accessed through the In-Between Theatre, you can place Digimon in the Digifarm and start training and feeding them.

Feeding them improves their bond, while training them improves their stats. Apart from increasing stats, training can also shift their personality. You’ll be given some Training Sets. Each Training Set boosts a specific stat and also shifts the personality to one of the four core values (not personality).
For example, a Training Set (Sauna A) boosts the HP stat and shifts the personality toward Heart. If you refer to the chart above, their personality will move to the right.
Here are all the training sets and how they shift their personalities:
| Training Set | Stat Boosted | Personality Shift |
| Training Set (Sauna A) | HP | Heart |
| Training Set (Boombox A) | SP | Understanding |
| Training Set (Punching Bag A) | ATK | Heart and Affection |
| Training Set (Club A) | DEF | Heart and Companionship |
| Training Set (Classroom A) | INT | Understanding and Companionship |
| Training Set (Tearoom A) | SPI | Understanding and Affection |
| Training Set (Treadmill A) | SPD | Heart and Companionship |
Now, that is very confusing at first. I mean, even if you memorize these, you’ll still be looking at tables for reference every time you want to change personalities.
Here’s another table to help:
| Values | Direction Change in the Personality Chart |
| Affection | Up |
| Companionship | Down |
| Heart | Right |
| Understanding | Left |

Here’s a concrete example of how it will work:
- Switching Daring to Astute.
- Look at the chart and count how many times you need to go left, right, up, and down. In this case, you need to go down twice and go to the left three times.
- Since we have Training Sets that have two personality shifts, we can use Training Set (Classroom A) twice to move two down and two left. All that remains is another shift to the left using Training Set (Boombox A).
- That’s three training sessions to change a Daring personality to Astute.
Each training session lasts 30 minutes, and everything is free. You can lower this even more with specific Agent Skills, but it isn’t a big factor anyway. If your goal is just to gain stats, you can leave your Digimon in the farm using the appropriate Training Set above. Keep in mind that Digimons in the DigiFarm also receive experience points as you progress in the story.
