Double Dragon II: The Revenge Cheats and Continue Codes – NES Classic Edition

Find out how to continue the game after you die, and learn how to get free extra lives.
This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

Double Dragon II: The Revenge was released as an arcade sequel to the original Double Dragon. Following the lives of Jimmy and Billy Lee on a mission to stop Willy, the leader of the Black Warriors, this arcade beat ‘em up made its way to homes everywhere with the NES in 1989. Aside from the name and some characters, though, the games are vastly different in content. In this feature, we’ll go over several continue codes, as well as offer some tips for players returning to this classic beat ‘em up decades later with the new NES Classic Edition system.

Double Dragon II: Continue Codes

When you die, instead of simply giving up and having to start again, you can enter a series of key presses that will allow you to continue the game from specific stages. We broke them down based on the stages that they lead to, so take a look and use the one that applies to your current game.

To continue the game from Stages 2 or 3, you’ll need to enter the following combination at the Game Over screen: Up, Right, Down, Left, A, B.

To continue from stages 4, 5 or 6, you will need to enter in the following code at the Game Over screen: Up, Down, Left, Right, B, A, A.

Finally, to continue the game from stages 7, 8 or 9, you will have to enter in this combination of key presses at the Game Over screen: A, A, B, B, Down, Up, Right, Left (on Controller 2). If you do not have a second controller, you will not be able to continue at stages 7-9.

Close the Helicopter Door

On the stage where you must face a ton of enemies on the helicopter, you often have to worry about your characters getting sucked out and killed. This can be avoided by using the following “glitch” to close the door.

When the level starts and the door to the helicopter opens, pause the game and leave it paused for around ten or so seconds. After ten or more seconds have passed, un-pause the game and the door should close, saving you the hassle of having to worry about your character getting sucked out and killed. Now you can focus on the enemies and take them out without this added challenge.

How to Get Extra Lives

Like many NES games, there is a way for you to acquire additional lives in Double Dragon II. To do this, you will need a second controller. Start up a two-player game and take out the first section of enemies on screen. Do not continue just yet. Instead, knock out the other player. Each time you defeat the second player, you will receive an additional life for your character. Continue knocking out the other character until you have a nice amount of lives stacked up before continuing.

Double Dragon II: The Revenge Tips

Unfortunately, those are all of the secrets and codes available for Double Dragon II: The Revenge. It’s a great beat ‘em up, and while we’re saddened there aren’t more secrets, you won’t really need any more if you follow these simple tips.

  • Be patient. Wait for the enemies to come to you.
  • Use combos. These are your most powerful attacks, and they are the best way to take enemies down quickly.
  • If you’re running low on life, stay back and wait for the enemies to come after you. Often times, you’ll be able to take out each group without becoming overwhelmed.
  • If you continue to struggle with a stage, keep trying to complete it, or step away and try a different game. Once you become frustrated your skill level will drop considerably. Come back once you have a level head.

Using these tips, and the few secrets and codes mentioned above, you can easily overcome the Shadow Warriors and avenge Billy’s girlfriend in Double Dragon II: The Revenge.
