So many hotfixes.

The new major content update for Path of Exile 2 is a bit of a mess and hasn’t been received all that well by the community. In addition to the new gameplay updates and additions, some of the older errors and technical issues have returned as well.

Grinding Gear Games has been slowly releasing new hotfixes to address these issues, but if you’re running into the “Unknown Object Type Serialized by Server” error while trying to play Path of Exile 2, here are a few things you can do.

Fixing Path of Exile 2 Unknown Object Type Serialized by Server Error

The specific error has been addressed by Grinding Gear Games in the 0.2.0 Hotfix 3. Several more hotfixes have come out since then, so it’s important that you have updated the game to the latest version.

If you’re still running into this error, however, there are a few things you can try.

Verify Game Files

Since the developers are constantly releasing new updates and hotfixes, there’s a good chance something can go wrong during the update process on Steam. Make sure you verify your game files whenever there is a new patch, just in case.

  • Open Steam, and navigate to your library
  • Here, right-click on Path of Exile 2 and select Properties
  • In the Installed Files tab, click on Verify integrity of game files

We recommend verifying files after each update just in case.

Update Path of Exile 2

I recommend increasing the update priority for Path of Exile 2 in Steam. This will ensure that Path of Exile 2 is updated first and that you aren’t behind on an important patch that might include stability improvements.

  • Open Steam and navigate to your library
  • Here, right-click on Path of Exile 2 and select Properties
  • In the Updates tab, select “High Priority” under Automatic Updates

Generic Troubleshooting

Apart from that, you can try the following generic troubleshooting suggestions.

  • Update DirectX and Visual C++ Redistributables
  • Switch to your dedicated GPU if you’re playing on a laptop
  • Update GPU Drivers: NVIDIA, AMD, and Intel
  • Add the game’s folder to your antivirus list of exceptions or exclusion
  • Update your BIOS, especially if you’re using an Intel 13th or 14th-generation processor
  • Make sure that the date and time in your Windows is correct
  • Update Windows to the latest version (1909 or higher)

This is a server-side issue, and there really isn’t much you can do apart from generic troubleshooting and ensuring that everything is working as intended on your end, hence the recommendations above. For now, though, the error seems to have been fixed, but it can appear again as it has in the original Path of Exile several times.

This error isn’t the only technical problem in the new content update for Path of Exile 2. If you’re getting much lower FPS than usual, I have a few recommendations.
