Is the Thrower Worth it in Clash of Clans?

Time to rush a base to TH17!

The Thrower is the new unit in the TH17 update in Clash of Clans. Visually, the unit looks like a very basic ranged attacker, similar to familiar units like Wizards, Archers, or even Bowlers. It takes a lot of commitment to upgrade a unit, so is this Thrower worth the investment in Clash of Clans? Let’s find out!

How Strong is the Thrower Unit in Clash of Clans?

On paper, the Thrower looks as if it can be an all-in-one unit in the sense that you can use it to act as the frontline and damage dealer at the same time. Since the Thrower has a massive hitpoint pool compared to other ranged units, it can take hits from Mortars, Cannons, Archer Towers, X-Bows, and more. It also has a long-range attack (6 tiles) compared to other ranged units, and it can target both ground and air units. They don’t have any preferred targets, so they will attack the closest building or enemy near them.

With the right support from spells and heroes, they can even survive hits from the TH17’s weapon or even the Firespitter. Because of this, it is one of the strongest units after the initial TH17 patch, making the unit so worth it and easy to use.

Here are the stats for the Thrower unit at three different levels:

  • level 1 – 180 damage per second/1,800 hit points.
  • level 2 – 190 damage per second/1,950 hit points.
  • level 3 – 200 damage per second/2,100 hit points.

The Thrower is unlocked at Barracks level 18, which is at Town Hall level 17.

Thrower Attack Strategy in Clash of Clans

There are many ways to use the Thrower unit. However, the most popular one is to have 6+ Throwers join the main army with a supporting Grand Warden and Minion Prince.

The Grand Warden is there to protect the Thrower from dangerous encounters such as pushing through Monoliths, Firespitters, and Inferno Towers. The Healing Tome and Eternal Tome are preferred, but any equipment will work too. Even a Fireball would work wonders once the main army is deep in the territory and you can use Invisibility spells to help direct your Fireball to the desired target.

The Minion Prince is there as a support, helping deal damage and mitigating the defense’s damage through its Dark Orb ability.

You want a Freeze, Rage, and Jump spell to help your main army clear the core of the defense. That basically sums up your main strategy.

For the execution of the attack, you want to decide on where you want the main army to enter from. Most of the time, it is by going through the Eagle Artillery first, but since it is gone for TH17 bases, you can decide to go to the opposite side of the TH17 since there are no more pesky Eagle Artilleries that have unlimited range.

Once you have decided on a side to attack, you want to clear around it with Yetis, Archer Queen, and your Barbarian King. This strategy paves the way for your main army to strike at the center. In Clash of Clans, this is called funneling, as you are eloquently carving a path for your main army to go straight because there are no more buildings on the side that can bait your main army to stray to the edge of the base.

Once your main army is approaching the middle, it is all about the timing of your hero abilities and spell usage now. The Thrower will melt everything in their path as long as you can keep them alive. That’s the Thrower attack strategy. There might be more strategies out there that have more of a mix, but this current strategy is sort of a “braindead” attack for those who want to casually win.
