Best Early Defense Setup in Factorio 2.0

Automating a tower defense setup.

In Factorio: Space Age, you go through the same beginning of Factorio as most of the DLC content shows up after launching your rockets to space, continuing the player’s journey. So, everyone has to deal with those annoying Biters and Spitters while expanding their base. Some of them might even restrict you from getting some important early resources because of their location. Here are some tips on how you can get an early defensive setup to deal with these Biters and Spitters in Factorio 2.0.

The Best Early Defense Setup Against Biters and Spitters in Factorio 2.0

The best early defense setup is to make use of Gun Turrets on corners of your base that are nearest to the Biter and Spitter spawners. If your base is surrounded by multiple spawners, you can build walls with Gun Turrets behind the wall and add a conveyor or transport belt two grids apart from the Gun Turrets so you can have this whole belt supplied with Firearm Magazines to continuously supply your Gun Turrets with ammo.

The defensive setup revolves around having a Firearm Magazine production line and circling it around the base so you can add Inserters to automatically fill up each Gun Turret near the walls. While this is quite a hard task, especially since you have to readjust them every time you expand, there are still benefits to doing it.

Before investing some time into this defensive setup, you must know your threats first. First, why do these Spitters and Biters attack your base? These attacks are not random, and they all depend on your pollution level and how close you are to a spawner.

If your production buildings contribute to pollution and are close to spawners, that base will be relentlessly attacked. If you try attacking the spawners using a Pistol or a Submachine Gun, you might struggle to destroy the spawners because they’ll constantly spawn Biters the second you eliminate one. If you are doing this solo, it is best to defend your base first and wait until you get some strong weapons to deal with these spawners.

When you have multiple weapons, remember to switch between them depending on the situation. Shotguns are better when they are swarming you, but Submachine Guns are better for clearing the spawners.

You can also use some Gun Turrets offensively to deal with the spawners early. That might be the easiest way to deal with the attacks since if there are no more nearby spawners, your base won’t get attacked anymore… until you expand.

It is still nice to have a great defensive setup in case something happens, and you can easily use the automated Firearm Magazines to supply the Gun Turrets to other production lines, like the Military Science Pack recipe.
