Empires of the Undergrowth is a difficult RTS game even if you only have one main resource to work with, which is Food. Your Formicarium or main colony needs Food to survive and progress, and each separate story stage has its own separate playthrough that also needs Food. In this guide, we’ll teach you how to get Food and manage it better in-game, as well as get Food for your Formicarium.
Where to Find Food in Empires of the Undergrowth
In the story mode, your Food supply is extremely limited in the Formicarium. You have no way of getting Food unless you go to the other stages of the story. You can go through stages 1.1 or 1.2 to play a separate instance of a game and finish the objectives. In this separate stage, the map, resources, and enemies are fixed, so there are ways to get Food here.
Use your Worker Ants to dig through different areas marked with a green exclamation point. These green exclamation points indicate Food resources or passive enemies you can eliminate to get Food. Usually, there are red markers along some of them, and these are hostile creatures you will have to fight once you create a pathway to them. These hostile creatures also give food when you eliminate them, but it all depends on how you handle the enemies.
Once you win a stage, you’ll get three rewards: Territory, Food, and Royal Jelly. These all transfer to your Formicarium, which is your main colony. This is also the main way to get Food and progress your Formicarium. You can choose among the three rewards on which you want more, but you’ll still get all three rewards regardless.
In challenge mode, you’ll get significantly more resources, so if you want Food for your Formicarium and some extra Royal Jelly to get upgrades, you should always go for challenge mode. Challenge mode is available after finishing the specific stage once and running it again.
Food Mechanics in Empires of the Undergrowth, Explained
Since you are fighting enemies for Food, you will also lose some of the resources if most of your ants in the colony die. Your eggs will automatically hatch new ants when your ants die, and they will need Food to do that. So, if you fight a powerful creature and lose almost 50+ ants, you will need upwards of 100+ Food to replenish your colony.
If you have the “Always look for Food” option, food is always processed by the Queen Ant. It is turned on by default next to your Ant groups. Your Worker Ants will continuously get all the Food as long as they have access to the food source locations. With extra Food, you can expand your colony by hatching new ants. You can practice in the game’s freeplay mode if you want to get the hang of the resource management in the game.
