After you boot up the game, you’ll see the main menu with the “Play” button on the upper left-hand side of your screen. Press play and you can either go through Tutorial, Story, Custom Game, or Arcade. Go to Custom Games, and it’ll take you to another menu.

There are two custom game modes: Skirmish and Free Play. In Skirmish, it is technically like Free Play, but you are fighting other colonies that you can set up. Keep in mind that if you play custom game modes, you won’t be able to get resources such as Royal Jelly, Food, and Territory for your Formicarium. However, the Food system is still the same when you play a custom game compared to a regular stage in the story.

In the Free Play tab, here’s where you’ll have more options. You have different game types to choose from, including Conquest, which is basically the Skirmish game mode. Here’s a list of all the game types and their win conditions:

  • Conquest – defeat all other colonies.
  • Domination – score the highest through defeating enemies.
  • Survival – survive until the timer runs out.
  • Besieged – survive endless waves of enemies. After round 6, you won’t be able to get food anymore.
  • Hunter – defeat a specific number of uber creatures.
  • Biomass – grow your colony to a specific size.
  • Creative – everything is free. You won’t get attacked.

From these game types, you can also set the metrics on each win condition under the Victory Condition Setup tab. Apart from the number settings, you can also filter the environmental creature selections, level setup, and difficulties of both the AI colonies and the environmental enemies.

If you are looking for a complete free-play experience, you can choose the creative mode and build to your heart’s content.
