Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: Is 60 FPS Mode An Option Available From Launch Day?

What would a web slinger be without 60 FPS?

Will PlayStation and Insomniac Games go the extra mile with Spider-Man 2 and release the exclusive title with the option to play at 60 FPS, giving the players what they want? Previously, with Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a 60 FPS mode was included in an update. This time, we’re hoping it’s an option from the offset. In this post, I will discuss this and more, explaining why it is essential for the developers to add a 60 FPS option.

Will Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Have a Performance Mode (60 FPS) at Launch?

According to PlayStation, yes, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 will launch with the option to play at 30 or 60 FPS. Going one or two better, the web-slinging game will have the option of playing at 30, 40, 60, and 120 FPS. The PS5 exclusive will have two modes: Fidelity and Performance Mode. Below are the differences between these two modes and what they offer:

Why is 60 FPS Mode a Big Deal for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?

Marvel Spider-Man 2 is getting all the attention and hype, and rightly so, as it becomes the biggest title release for PlayStation (PS5) and Insomniac Games in 2023. The hype surrounding Spider-Man 2 doesn’t come as a surprise because of all the awards and nominations it racked up at respective Awards Events back in 2021. Some of these awards and nominations are as follows:

  • Nominated for Best Animation at the BAFTA Games Award,
  • Nominee for Best Game at BAFTA Games Awards,
  • Nominated for Best Animation and Artistic NAVGTR Award,
  • Nominated for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Real-Time Project at the VES Awards, and
  • Winner of Outstanding Achievement for Character Animation in a Video Game at the Annie Awards.

As you can see from the above listing, most of the nominations earned and the awards won are for visual performances. If they are to rank in the same categories and try to win the ones they missed out on the last time, a 60 FPS mode is vital to the cause.

With Spider-Man 2, they’ll need to improve on what they’ve created with the past two Spider-Man titles. And to do this effectively, they must create a high-performance mode that not only improves on the previous web-slinging titles but also makes their counterparts’ jaws drop.

This has to be the only setback to setting the bar so high. When you set a high bar, it becomes harder and harder to challenge or surpass the standards set. This then begs the question: Is Sony a victim of its own success? For more on Spider-Man 2, you can read: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2: All Pre Order Editions Listed
