Where to Find Raphael’s Old Enemy in Baldur’s Gate 3

You’ll want to start looking for Yurgir, Raphael’s old enemy, after picking up the side quest Kill Raphael’s Old Enemy from Raphael himself near the cemetery in the western Shadow-cursed Lands, just before Thorm’s Mausoleum. Raphael will ask you to confront an old enemy of his, and points you toward the mausoleum.

After entering Thorm’s Mausoleum, completing the Gauntlet of Shar’s Umbral Gem puzzle, and defeating the undead Justiciars, head east through the corridor until you see a Displacer Beast. Jump down the steps and follow this beast through the hallway until you reach the coordinates (X: -673, Y: -754). In this room, you’ll find Yurgir, who you can kill or break his contract and set him free.

Depending on your choices and dice rolls, you can even make Yurgir do all the work for you.

How to Solve Thorm’s Mausoleum Puzzle

When you first enter the Mausoleum, go north to find a room with three paintings and numerous traps. Avoiding these traps, interact with the buttons under each picture to open up the northern wall, allowing you to exit this entryway and begin the Umbral Gem puzzle.

How to Solve the Umbral Gem Puzzle

After interacting with the Traversal Gem platform and descending into the next area, you’ll enter the Gauntlet of Shar. Go through the northern stone doors to see a statue with a purple gem in the center.

However, rather than approaching it, sneak into the east and west side rooms to find levers hidden in small alcoves. Pull these levers and interact with the Mystic Thuribles that descend to extinguish them. You’ll have to do this eight times in total.

Once you extinguish the flames, run through the maze in the center, avoiding the purple walls along the way, and interact with the gem to complete the puzzle and move on to the next area. You’ll find a group of undead warriors, who you can either fight or sneak past into the eastern corridor to find Yurgir’s room.

Should You Defeat or Save Yurgir?

When you meet Yurgir for the first time, you’ll find numerous dialogue options that lead to the following outcomes:

  • Attack Yurgir and his minions.
  • Persuade Yurgir to eliminate his minions, beast, and himself.
  • Break his contract and save him.

The first two options fulfill Raphael’s task, allowing you to gain information from him in exchange for defeating Yurgir. However, if you want to betray Raphael and save Yurgir’s life, you can instead help him break the contract. Astarion will disapprove of this decision, though, so choose carefully!

If you want a specific outcome, below are the key dialogue options you’ll have to pick:

Attack Yurgir

  • Attack.

Persuade Yurgir

  • Put that thing down. I’m here to talk.
  • Wait—you know Raphael?
  • I’ve had dealings with that devil. Maybe we can help each other out.
  • Let’s share our experiences about Raphael. Perhaps we can help each other.
  • Show me this contract. Perhaps there’s something you missed.
  • Raphael wanted you to kill Dark Justiciars? Why?
    • Must succeed an Insight Check to continue this route.
  • The lyrics are a trick. You’ve always had an audience—your followers. Get rid of them. (Persuasion Check 16).

From here, you can attempt up to three persuasion checks. The first, if successful, leads to Yurgir defeating his minions. You can do two more, each requiring a roll of 21 or higher to eliminate the beast and, lastly, Yurgir himself. However, you can stop the persuasion checks and attack him instead if you feel that you’ll fail the checks.

Succeeding all three persuasion checks and defeating Yurgir with this method will still satisfy Raphael, so you won’t have to worry about failing the quest or angering him.

Save Yurgir

  • Put that thing down. I’m here to talk.
  • Wait—you know Raphael?
  • I’ve had dealings with that devil. Maybe we can help each other out.
  • Let’s share our experiences about Raphael. Perhaps we can help each other.
  • Show me this contract. Perhaps there’s something you missed.
  • Your contract is a song?
  • There must be something you missed. Let me search this place for you. (Persuasion Check 16).

If you succeed in the persuasion check, you’ll begin a new quest to investigate the Gauntlet of Shar for clues to break Yurgir’s Contract. You’ll find various rats to defeat in the yellow quest circle, including one you can speak to to progress through the mission. After defeating the last enemy, you’ll complete the contract and save Yurgir, annoying Raphael along the way.
