How To Transfer Your Horses From BotW to TotK

While the process of transferring your horses from BotW to TotK is easy, there are a few things that you’ll need to be aware of. If you played through Breath of the Wild on the Wii U, you will not be able to use your old horses. This is going directly from the Switch version of BOTW, so if you had some noble stallions on your Wii U, it’s time to say goodbye… or, you can keep playing BOTW on the Wii U, no judgment here. We loved the Wii U.

If you’re one of the many that recently purchased a new OLED Switch, you’ll also need to make sure that you’ve transferred your BOTW save file onto your new system. This is a necessary piece of information, especially if you’re planning on taking advantage of this feature. No save file, no horses… until you find one in the wild, that is.

But, once you have made your way to Hyrule, you’ll need to visit a Stable and speak to the person behind the counter to get the process started. Even if you haven’t found a horse in Tears of the Kingdom yet, you’ll want to say Take Horse from the available options. The stablehand will start giving you a hard time about an Invisible Horse, and then realize that you have horses boarded here already, and stop hassling you.

After he’s done being a jerk, you’ll be able to select Take Horse once again and see your old friends in a new world. Seeing as I devoted a lot of time to Breath of the Wild back in the day, and also went through an absolutely hellacious JoJo phase, it was great to see my old pal Hol Horse once more, alongside Blorf and Flippo.

What makes this even better, however, is the fact that all of the customizations you did in Breath of the Wild will carry over directly into Tears of the Kingdom, so you’ll have them in their perfect form once again. Select whichever horse you would like to take out, and get ready to ride once again into the sunset.
