Is Wo Long Fallen Dynasty Open World? – Answered

Wo Long of the Wild or Wo Long Nioh?

Elden Ring has changed the rules of the game when it comes to Souls titles. Although these games always provided a great level of freedom in terms of classes you could play, the equipment you could wear, and many other RPG-like customizations, their worlds were mainly linear, in the style of old-school games, only sometimes having slightly wider zones for a little bit of side content.

From Software’s hit from last year took that formula into a true open-world, so since then, the question arises for every next Souls-like title – is it open-world, or should it be? Team Ninja’s Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty seems like a huge game, so many fans are asking the same question. So, let’s find out if Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is an open-world title or not.

The answer to that burning question is simple – it is not. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty doesn’t have an open world, instead the new Souls-like game from the authors of the Nioh series, follows a linear progression in the world separated into old-school areas/levels.

Each level of the game has its own unique boss at the end, as well as special companions that you will meet. In a true old-school fashion, the levels will progressively become more challenging, but also wider with more opportunities for exploration and wandering – similar to an open world, but not quite the scope of something like Elden Ring.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty doesn’t feature a full map where you can see the whole world

If you really want a real open-world experience, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is not that, but certainly this is not a title you should ignore, especially if you are a fan of Souls-like games and the Nioh series. With its 34 to 40 hours of duration, Fallen Dynasty is by no means a short game, but it’s not a title where you’ll spend three-digit hours either, so there is that. We are sure that some Souls players will appreciate this more focused approach because gigantic open-world games can sometimes be overwhelming, especially if you don’t have an eternity to devote to them.

So, take Wo Long for what it is, you can check our impressions as well in our very own Prima Games review where we gave it 8.5/10 and concluded that, “Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty sails above the rest, carried by its stylish execution and the experience from Team Ninja’s unforgiving pedigree.”
