Buff those ants up!

Empires of the Undergrowth has a neat but simple progression system in its story mode, where you unlock genetic adaptations to your ants to improve your colony. You can strengthen your ants by making them bulkier, stronger, and more agile, or you can also unlock other ant species to bring a more diverse composition to your colony. Here’s a guide on how to upgrade and unlock ants in Empires of the Undergrowth.

Where to Upgrade Your Ants in Empires of the Undergrowth

In the story mode and when you are using your main Formicarium, there are two buttons on the top left side of your screen. The one on the top is the mission or chapter select while the one below it is the Adaptations button. Once you open it, you’ll see the Adaptations menu.

In the Adaptations menu, you’ll see different species of ants, and you’ll innately have the Queen, Worker, and Soldier Ants unlocked. However, none of them have upgrades yet, but you can use Royal Jelly to purchase them by hovering over the tiles below the specific ant you want to upgrade.

There are three tiles below the ant which are the upgradable levels for the ants. These three tiers of upgrades will strengthen that ant in their specialty. For example, the Solider Ant upgrades will make them sturdier and deal more damage. Worker Ant upgrades will make them sturdier, faster, and more efficient when it comes to their asks.

These tier upgrades will mirror what that specific ant does best. So, if you have a more durable Soldier Ant, you can save more food since you don’t have to replenish your colony if they don’t die in the first place.

There are also two different upgrade tiles beside these tier upgrades, and these will be their ability slots. Each ant will have two ability slots, and you can choose between two different abilities for each ability slot.

Some of the abilities are just added stats for the ants, but some of them are game-changers for specific types of situations in a match. Overall, these upgrades and abilities are all extremely important to your colony and you’ll need to get all the Royal Jelly you can get to get all these upgrades as fast as possible. All the upgrades cost Royal Jellies and you’ll only get them when you play matches in the story mode.
