Once you’ve unlocked the Military Quarter in the Hearthstone Curse of Naxxramas expansion, and defeated Instructor Razuvious and Gothik the Harvester, you’re left with the final boss, The Four Horsemen. They consist of Baron Rivendare as the boss character, and three minions that are in play at the beginning of the battle. Rivendare’s minions are Lady Blaumeux, Thane Korth’azz and Sir Zeliek. Each is a 1/7 minion that gives Rivendare immunity to your attacks.
There are a few different ways you can approach this battle depending on your hero of choice and the cards available in your deck. A Priest is generally your best choice due to his Shadow Word: Pain cards, which removes one of the Horsemen in a single shot. You may also have access to Cabal Shadow Priest to take control of one of the minions and make yourself immune.
Whichever class you decide to use, you need to remove or silence the three Horsemen minions before you can effectively attack Rivendare. Don’t bother trying to use board-clearing minions or spells because they won’t work in this battle. You’ll lose the card and the mana spent on the card, and you won’t gain anything in return.
Silence cards work well in this battle. If you can silence a minion, it’s not imperative that you remove it before you can target Rivendare. For instance, if you take down two minions, then silence the third, you can attack Rivendare without worrying too much about the silenced minion. Rivendare has no other minions in his deck, but he does have spells from Mage, Paladin, Priest and Warlock. He can deal direct damage and buff his own minions with relative ease.
While at first glance it may not seem as though the three damage from the Horsemen minions has a significant impact on the match, the damage adds up quickly. In addition, Rivendare can buff the minions and he also uses a Runeblade weapon that he can also buff with Mark of the Horsemen, which gives the Runeblade and his minions +1/1.
You need to have cards and minions ready to deal with the minions so you can target Rivendare, but once all three minions are down, the Runeblade gains +3 Attack. This is also one of the reasons Silence works well in this battle. If Rivendare has a Runeblade equipped and only one minion remains, you can silence the minion to avoid buffing the Runeblade, then attack Rivendare directly.
Taunt cards can help reduce the damage of the minions and Runeblade, but it’s imperative that you destroy or disable the minions as quickly as possible. Rivendare will use Redemption to bring one of his Horsemen back to life if it dies, so the faster you take them down, the better off you’ll be. Once you defeat Rivendare and the other Horsemen, you gain two Deathlord cards. The Deathlord is a three-mana, 2/8 minion with taunt that has a Deathrattle that places a minion from your opponent’s deck into play. This minion works well against the heroic mode Rivendare because he doesn’t have any minion cards aside from the other Horsemen.
