Zelda: Breath of the Wild – Amiibo Functionality, How to Use Amiibos

Learn what amiibo do in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
This article is over 7 years old and may contain outdated information

Amiibo functionality has become one of Nintendo’s most popular products over the past year or so, and many of the new games that Nintendo releases support these special collectible items in some fashion. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild amiibo functionality is no different, and players can use the various Breath of the Wild amiibo that Nintendo has released over the past several months to receive special items in the game.

The types of items you receive from the various amiibo all depends on the collectible itself. While our Super Smash Bros. amiibo only rewarded us with some additional food items to prepare in our pots, meanwhile, our Sheik amiibo rewarded us with some food items and a chest that contained a weapon. Amiibo can only be used once per 2-hour period, so you’ll only be able to get these special items once a day.

What’s so important about amiibo, though, is that a select few of these special collectible figurines offer very special items within the game. Items that can only be obtained through the use of an amiibo. We’ll go more in-depth in just a moment, but first let’s talk about how you use amiibo in Breath of the Wild.

How to use Amiibo

Amiibo aren’t activated by default in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, so you’ll need to actually set the game up to use them before you can start loading items in. To do this, open up your Inventory menu with the Start (+) button. Now, navigate over to the System tab. Here you can select Options. This will list off an assortment of options that you can change and choose from.

Look at the top of the list for the amiibo option. By default it says “Do Not Use”. Click on it and activate amiibo to continue.

Now that you’ve activated amiibo, open up your Rune menu to change the current Rune on your Sheikah Slate. Scroll all the way to the right to find the amiibo sign. Select this, then press the button to activate your Rune and line up the circle on a small flat patch of ground. Take the amiibo you want to use and hold it over the right stick on your Joy-con, or over the NFC area on your Wii U. This will spawn in the items available from the amiibo.

Special Amiibo Items

As we mentioned above, some amiibo only reward players with items like food or materials. These items are especially useful if you’re trying to find out how to cook in Breath of the Wild. Other amiibo, however, will unlock more specific items, things that can only be acquired by using those amiibo in the game. These two most specific options at this moment for amiibo-only content include the horse Epona, and a companion version of Wolf Link.

To activate these special in-game items, players will need to find and scan in the appropriate amiibo. For Epona, players will need to scan in the Link amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. collection. To acquire Wolf Link, players must purchase and scan in the Wolf Link amiibo. These can be purchased from several various locations like Toys R’ Us, Amazon, and other outlets.
