Warhammer 40K: Darktide has a ton of special actions for each of its weapons, providing a different approach to killing your target or assisting you in your holy conquest. As just one example, when pressing the special action button for Lasguns, a helpful flashlight activates guiding you toward your next target. One such special action for the Combat Shotgun is leaving a few confused though. Here’s what the special ammo does for the Combat Shotgun in Warhammer 40K: Darktide.
What is Shotgun Special Ammo in Darktide?
Chances are you first noticed this when, well, pressing the special action button with the Combat Shotgun equipped. This will have the character load a round into the chamber which makes a strange sound when fired. That’s all that happens, though, and unless you press the button again, the next shot is back to normal. Seeing as there isn’t an explanation for it, this has left some people rather confused.
In essence, special ammo for the Combat Shotgun changes the spray pattern completely. It’s shown better in the above image but if you can’t see it, the shotgun special ammo (left) creates a horizontal line while the regular shotgun blast (right) creates your standard circle of pellets.
This makes the special ammo for the weapon best suited towards dealing with multiple enemies, while the default shot is better for slaughtering single enemies. One of the best uses for special ammo is aiming at the head level of a crowd and pulling the trigger. Because of the way the spread is in a horizontal line, several heads will pop and score you a few kills. It might not sound that great in theory, but try it, and we promise you won’t be able to get enough of the satisfying head-popping.
