What Does Ageless Mean in Civilization 7?

Civilization is definitely Ageless.

Civilization 7 has several structures with tooltips attached to the names. Depending on the icon, most of them are recommended by an advisor (the colorful icons). These structures could also have the “Ageless” tag, but what does Ageless mean?

Here’s a short guide on what “Ageless” means and whether you should focus on building them in Civilization 7.

What Does the Ageless Tag on Buildings Mean in Civilization 7?

Ageless is a mechanic where the structure in question will last throughout eras, ages, or phases, whichever you prefer to call it. Since the game is divided into ages like Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern, buildings with the “Ageless” tag will not disappear after reaching the next age.

The icons below the Ageless refer to recommendations by your advisors and have nothing to do with the Ageless mechanic.

Most Ageless buildings are unique structures or Wonders. Warehouse buildings are also ageless; you can construct several improvements before building one.

Is it Beneficial to Build Ageless Buildings in Civilization 7?

While Ageless buildings might sound good, there are crucial consequences for them in the future. The main benefit of constructing Ageless buildings like Saw Pits, Stonecutters, and Granaries is not building them again and reaping their benefits after an age or era has passed. Because of this, you’ll have some extra production, food, and maybe even income throughout the ages.

While building them has huge upsides, the main consequence is being stuck with them forever. If you go through the ages, you’ll eventually unlock other buildings, mostly placed on Urban tiles. Some of these buildings have adjacent bonuses.

For example, the Temple of Jupiter, an ageless building, has a +1 Culture bonus for each adjacent Happiness Constructible. Placing non-Happiness Constructibles adjacent to the Temple of Jupiter will waste the adjacent bonus effect. The same goes for placing an Ageless building that increases Happiness with specific adjacent buildings next to it.

There are several buildings with this mechanic, and you can read through each of the building’s tooltips to know all these adjacent bonuses. Building placements are crucial, and having an Ageless building will make you think twice about where to place them since they are permanent.

Placing structures, whether Ageless or not, should always play around adjacent bonuses and other factors such as crises, policies, and more.
