Lucky Friends is a temporary status you or one of the buddies on your Pokemon GO friend list can gain. There’s a chance of becoming a Lucky Friend when you are Best Friends with someone.

Once you’re Lucky Friends with someone, your next trade will result in both Pokemon becoming Lucky Pokemon. That’s fantastic because it means that leveling up that Pokemon will require 50% less Stardust. Plus, that Lucky Pokemon will get a cute background to boot. I personally adore my Lucky Ninetales and will die before I ever trade or transfer her away.

Once you’re Best Friends with someone, you have one attempt per day to transform that friend into a Lucky Friend. You can do that by opening a gift from them, teaming up in Raids or Gym battles, or battling them. Essentially, if it’s an action that will level up your Friendship, it’s an action that can potentially alchemize them into a Lucky Friend.

You’ll even get a notification stating that they’re now a Lucky Friend, and you’ll see that their name on your Friend List will be gold-colored. But once you’ve traded together, they’ll lose that status, and you’ll have to begin grinding out Lucky Friend status all over again.

Fortunately, during the Lunar New Year Event, which runs from January 19, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. to Monday, January 23, 2023, at 8:00 p.m. local time, your chances of becoming Lucky Friends with best trainer buds is greatly increased!
