What Are Cosmic Chests in Fortnite?

Cosmic treasure.

Fortnite players enjoying Duos, Trios, or Squads may stumble across a special type of chest during Season 7 called a Cosmic Chest. It looks like a purple and blue floating diamond and when you approach it, will initiate a timer.

If you don’t have the rest of your team with you, you won’t be able to open these Cosmic Chests. Confused? Here’s what you need to know about Cosmic Chests!

What Are Cosmic Chests in Fortnite?

Cosmic Chests are a new type of openable chest in Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 7 that contain weapons, supplies, and even Alien Artifacts. Cosmic Chests are only found in Duos, Trios, and Squads.

You won’t find these if you’re going it alone in Solos or any of the LTMs, and for good reason as Cosmic Chests require more than one person to open.

Cosmic Chests can often be found at named locations, though they appear randomly so even if you investigate north of Lazy Lake for example, there’s no guarantee you’ll find a Cosmic Chest there. What helps is that Cosmic Chests will be marked on your map similar to a Supply Drop (see image above).

Some named locations that are worth checking out if you’re in search of Cosmic Chests include Pleasant Park, Misty Meadows, Steamy Stacks, Holly Hedges, Retail Row, and Believer Beach.

As for how you open Cosmic Chests, you’ll need each and every member of your party – whether it’s your partner in Duos, your two other teammates in Trios, or the rest of your Squad – to gather around the Cosmic Chest.

Keep in mind that if you get too close to the Cosmic Chest while waiting for your Squad, you may cause the counter to begin. Every Cosmic Chest has this counter, giving you and your team five minutes to open the Cosmic Chest after you approach it.

If the counter hits zero before the Cosmic Chest is opened, you won’t be able to open it. Next, every teammate will need to use their pickaxe to hit the Cosmic Chest. It’s kind of like a piñata that way in that you hit it and eventually it’ll burst open.

Note that you will be forced to take turns when it comes to hitting the Cosmic Chest. Whichever player has the pink stream of light that snakes out from the crystal on them will be the one able to hit the Cosmic Chest.

When the pink light stream moves to someone else, that player then has the ability to hit the Cosmic Chest. When the Cosmic Chest opens, you’ll find a randomized assortment of rare weapons, supplies, ammo, and more.

Even better, you can earn XP and Bars for opening Cosmic Chests (similar to regular Chests), and you have the chance to receive Alien Artifacts from Cosmic Chests

If you’re unfamiliar with Alien Artifacts, they’re used like Battle Stars to help you unlock customization options for your alien as part of the Season 7 Battle Pass. You can find Alien Artifacts in different locations throughout the Fortnite map each week in addition to ones found by opening Cosmic Chests.

If you’re opening Cosmic Chests for Alien Artifacts exclusively, there’s a limit to how many you can receive and that limit is 15 Alien Artifacts from Cosmic Chests per week. To recap, Cosmic Chests are a new type of chest in Fortnite that’s only found in Duos, Trios, and Squads.

It requires the entire team together to open, and you’ll only have five minutes after the counter begins to open the Cosmic Chest. For an example of a team opening a Cosmic Chest, we’ve included a helpful video down below from YouTuber Perfect Score demonstrating how to open a Cosmic Chest.
