The Empty Man Outer Worlds Guide – Quest Walkthrough

The Empty Man is Vicar Max’s Follower quest, as you might have gathered. He’s one of the characters that you meet very early on in your travels, shortly after you meet Parvarti at The Cannery. When Vicar Max is recruited to your crew, he’ll give you the quest The Empty Man. Once you’ve left Terra-2 and completed the main quest Comes Now The Power, you can head to a place called The Groundbreaker.

Once you touch down, the first part of The Empty Man Outer Worlds quest is to get a data cache with the whereabouts of Reginald Chaney on it. You can do this via one of the following ways:

  1. Finishing the quest called Who Goes There from Sanita to be let back there
  2. Sneaking into the security office where it’s located
  3. Stealing an ID and disguising yourself to get it
  4. Persuading/ bribing Lee Flores to give you entry.

The first method obviously doesn’t require any nefarious behavior, while all of the rest will require skill checks of some kind or trying to blend in with your environment. If you aren’t naturally persuasive, you can still give Lee Flores 775 bits to achieve your ends, so it’s not all a lost hope if you don’t want to go through the trouble of doing a quest to gain access.

Once you have access and you’ve picked the lock to get the security device (30 lockpick needed), you’ll be asked to go to Fallbrook on Monarch. Your job here is to track down Reginald himself, and you’re going to have to play mediator if you want things to end well. Pick the following dialogue options when prompted for your own input.

  • “What’s going on here?”
  • “You’re going to give up everything…”
  • “Max, stop.”
  • “There.”

After this, the quest will take you to Scylla for the last portion of tasks. Once you’ve showed up there, you’ll have to go to a Hermit who will help you and Max meditate on some tough questions. We’re… very sure that you both just get super high, but that’s neither here nor there. If you want the best possible outcome for your mate Max, pick the following dialogue options when you’re prompted to engage:

  • “If she’s a hallucination, why am I seeing her too?”
  • “We came all this way. We ought to at least hear her out.”
  • “Your mom’s right, Max.”
  • “Look where we are, Max.”
  • “If he does, he shouldn’t.”
  • “Yeah, please don’t do that.”
  • “You’re doing great, Max!”

That’s the work done! Now that you’ve got our guide to The Empty Man Outer Worlds Follower quest, you’ll be able to get on Vicar Max’s good side and likely stay there permanently unless you do some wildly out of character nonsense.
