The Alters Save File Location on PC

The Alters is now available on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store, as well as Xbox Series S|X and the PS5. This new title from 11 Bit Studios is another ambitious release with plenty of unique mechanics for players to dive into, where each decision matters.

This means that your local data is pretty important, and losing it could mean starting from scratch. If you want to back it up, here is the save file location for The Alters.

The Alters Save File Location

Like other Unreal Engine titles, the SaveGames folder contains another folder with your unique Steam ID. Inside it, you’ll find a bunch of different sav (.sav) files, and I don’t recommend moving around individual files in this case. Instead, copy the entire TheAlters folder for future use.

You can reach the same location by entering the following address in Windows Run or Explorer.

%USERPROFILE%/AppData/Local/11bitstudios/TheAlters/Steam/Saved/SaveGames/

Does The Alters have multiple save slots?

Even though you can create many versions of yourself, The Alters doesn’t have more than one active save slot.

Be extra careful here, because if you select the “New Game” option if you have an existing active save, it will start a new game without any warning prompt. If you have accidentally done this, don’t worry, simply exit to the main menu as soon as you gain control, because The Alters doesn’t autosave. Your existing profile should be active. I was able to recreate this scenario and didn’t lose my progress.

I hope that the developers consider adding multiple save slots, because the game encourages replayability quite a bit, or at the very least give a warning prompt when someone tries to start a new game.

The Alters Steam Features

On Steam, you can expect the following client features for The Alters:

• Steam Cloud: If you’re playing The Alters on more than one device, then Steam Cloud is quite handy. It backs up all your progress whenever you close the game, and retrieves it whenever you launch it on your logged-in device. The game also has a playable rating for the Steam Deck, so you can switch between systems seamlessly.
• Steam Family Share: All members of your Steam family can now access The Alters in their library.
• Achievements: The Alters has a total of 56 achievements to unlock on Steam.

The Alters is one of my favorite releases of the year and rewards players for taking risks and finding solutions. It’s also a very solid PC release, despite being developed on Unreal Engine 5.
