Every Super Smash Bros. game contains unlockable items. When you first pick up the game, it’s generally a mad rush to get the characters and stages unlocked as quickly as possible. To make that experience quick and painless, here’s a complete breakdown of the character and stage unlockables in Super Smash Bros. 3DS.

How to unlock characters in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

All of the unlockable characters in Super Smash Bros. 3DS can be unlocked by playing an abundance of Smash Mode battles. Once you have reached the required number of matches to unlock a character, you must defeat the character in battle before they will become playable. This battle can only take place after a single player match against one or more CPU opponents. Following the CPU match, the character will challenge you to a one-on-one fight.

If you get together with some friends and play 120 Smash Mode battles (online matches also count), you will meet the unlock requirements for every character in the game. Keep in mind, you still must play a single player match in order to face each character and eventually unlock them. For example, if you play 100 matches against human opponents online to unlock the requirements for Bowser Jr., you will still have to play at least one match against a CPU opponent in order to face Bowser Jr. and actually unlock him.

For some characters, there are alternate methods to unlock them. Characters with multiple unlock methods can be unlocked using ANY of the methods below. You are NOT required to perform all of the tasks. Once you have met the requirements to unlock a character, you must first face that character in battle. If you lose the fight, you must complete the most recent task again to get back to the fight. For example, if you play 10 matches to fight Ness and then lose, you must play another match to fight Ness again.

In addition, if you lose an unlock battle, then complete the requirements to unlock a different character, you will continue to face the same character you lost to initially until that character has been defeated and unlocked. Only then will you be able to fight the new characters. For example, if you failed to beat Ness, then played through Classic Mode as Marth to unlock Lucina, you would fight Ness again instead of Lucina. If you beat Ness, you would then have to play through classic mode as Marth one more time to face Lucina.

How to unlock stages in Super Smash Bros. for 3DS

The stages that are unlocked by winning battles in Smash mode can be unlocked by playing against any number of opponents using any settings. If you’re playing against CPU opponents, they can be set to any difficulty level. To complete Smash mode matches as quickly as possible, set the rules to one stock and simply KO yourself as soon as the match begins. If you must win the matches, set the CPU opponent to level one to make it easier.

For the stages that require the use of a Final Smash, the easiest way to achieve this is to once again play against a CPU opponent, set it to level one with only the Smash Ball item turned on. Wait until the Smash Ball appears, then pick it up, hit the CPU opponent with it and complete the match.
