Sonic the Hedgehog is the perfect character to star in an endless running game. Sega agreed, and its successful Sonic Dash for iOS and Android devices sped to more than 140 million downloads worldwide. With a number like this a sequel was inevitable, and now we have Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom, a game that builds off its predecessor with new features.
On that note, this article includes tips and tricks for Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom. We’ll tell you how to collect more rings and survive a bit longer so you can achieve a high score.
Collect orbs and use your Dash ability
Longtime Sonic the Hedgehog players know collecting rings is important, but in Sonic Dash 2 blue orbs factor heavily into the gameplay. Collecting these objects builds the Dash Bar at the top of the screen, and when it’s full, double tap to activate your character’s Dash ability, which lets you charge through enemies and objects (trees, bombs) without penalty.
Remember, this is temporary invincibility and it’s easy to die when it wears off. Keep an eye on the meter and prepare to regain full control when it’s almost empty. To that end, it’s a good idea to plot your next move before your Dash fully depletes.
Collect as many gold rings as possible
Of course you should make a point to grab gold rings whenever the opportunity arises. Having even one ring in your character’s inventory will prevent a game over if you run into something. Additionally, you’re able to purchase upgrades with gold rings, while red star rings let you continue a run (these are tough to obtain, so use them sparingly) and buy new characters.
Tip: Don’t waste red star rings. If you experience a Game Over with a low score, end the current run and start over. Save the Red Star Rings for when you need them most, or to unlock the other heroes.
Take Junctions
The best way to collect gold rings is to travel down Junctions. These alternate routes let you go right or left through a cave. Taking a Junction automatically “banks” the current amount of rings collected in a run, which means you won’t lose them should your character take damage. In addition, you have the option of switching characters to make use of their signature abilities. Do this if you want to change things up a bit, or feel one hero’s ability is ideal for tougher sections of the game.
Activate Sprites for in-game bonuses
These magical creatures imbue your character(s) with special abilities. Some are a one time use, while others Sega labeled as Forever, since you can take advantage of these sprites whenever you want. Synth, for example, is a one time use sprite that results in combos lasting two seconds longer. Legs, on the other hand, is a Forever sprite that allows your Dash to last 10 percent longer. To activate a Sprite, simply tap the desired creature.
Even better, you can spend gold rings to upgrade sprites. Upgrading Legs a few times means our Dash lasts 40 percent longer than its original form.
How do you get new Sprites in Sonic Dash 2? You must spend Red Star Rings to find more, and you can only do this once every few hours.
Tip: You can sell unwanted Sprites for gold rings, but you won’t always receive many in return.
Complete events
Similar to Crossy Road, Sonic Dash 2: Sonic Boom lets you complete in-game events for prizes; collect 100 rings in a single run, for instance. Press the Events tab to see which ones are currently available, as well as events coming soon (the game displays the times). Select the event you want to run and pay the necessary ticket to take part.
After finishing Events, go to your inbox to claim the rewards.
Upgrade characters
Spend gold rings to upgrade characters and receive benefits for playing as different heroes. Upgrading Sonic once gives your score a 10 percent boost for every meter he runs, while Knuckles receives a 10 percent boost for destroying enemies.
