What is SBMM in Fortnite?

Now, SBMM is the abbreviation for skill-based matchmaking. As the name suggests, this feature matches players of similar skill with each other in multiplayer games. This means that players of lower-skilled are matched against other players with lower skills, while highly-skilled players are matched with other players who have proven to have a high skill-level in a game. This would be expected in a ranked playlist for a multiplier game where the point is to play against players who will give you a challenge. However, SBMM has been in Fortnite for all of its regular playlists, which have caused plenty of displeasure for players, as they do not enjoy the fact that they have to play in more competitive matches when they are doing a regular game.

The motivation behind SBMM in games is to keep players who are not very good playing because they will not stop because they get matched up with better players who will beat them handily. SBMM has become a significant talking point in the Fortnite community recently with the infamous feature reportedly being removed from the squad playlist, meaning that players of various skill levels are now being matched with each other. This reported removal of SBMM in the Fortnite squad playlist has led to players showing off them getting dozens of kills by themselves playing in the squad playlist going up against full teams of players.

It remains to be seen if Epic Games will remove SBMM from the other regular playlists or if it will look at adding it back to the squad playlist in the future. There is no doubt that many members of the community are pleased to see this change happen and will be happy to see it applied to other playlists to stop them from facing “sweats” every time they play. Others feel that players showing off their domination of teams with the removal of SBMM in Fortnite will cause Epic Games to add it back in due to their performances reinforcing their motivation for having the feature in the game in the first place.
