If you’re a regular Pokemon GO player, you’ve probably already dived into the new Mega Evolution content, at least as far as what’s available now. This new feature does a lot to the game, even behind the scenes, and it’s making for an interesting future for Pokemon GO overall. But there’s only so much you can do right now, especially since a lot of it relies on participating in Raid Battles. Luckily, Niantic is planning on running a Mega Evolution event in September.
Pokemon GO Mega Evolution Event Dates and Themes
Niantic has already released a lot of its plans for September 2020 in Pokemon GO, although a lot of it seems to be recovering from the more jam-packed July and August. That said, clearly that was just a move to make room for Mega Evolution, as a whole separate schedule has been laid out for that in September on top of everything else.

There will be three weeks in September dedicated to Mega Evolution. More details will be released on the specifics, but each week will have a specific theme presumably tied to specific rewards and bonuses. The schedule is laid out below, per Niantic’s official website:
- Tuesday, September 1, 2020 through September 7 – This event will be focused on Mega Raid battles. Mega Raids will be your primary method of acquiring Mega Energy, the resource required for transforming your Pokemon to Mega form. It’s likely this event will include things like extra rewards, Raid Battle frequency, and more.
- Friday, September 11, 2020 through September 17 – This week will be about using the Mega Pokemon you got from the first week by taking them into different kinds of battles. The focus here will be on Gym battles, Team GO Rocket battles, and Trainer Battles. Mega Pokemon are currently barred from the GO Battle League, but we’re expecting incentives to bring your Megas into those other modes.
- Tuesday, September 22 through September 28 – The final Mega Evolution event week in September is about Pokemon GO’s buddy system! Players will be encouraged to buddy up with their Mega Pokemon, take snapshots with them, and share with each other on social media platforms.
That’s all for now! In the meantime, there is plenty of introductory content available, including cosmetic items in the shop for your Trainer, and of course the Mega Beedrill-focused Special Research quests.
