Mektul, the Forgemaster, is an Act 3 boss that you will find in the Molten Vault in Path of Exile 2. Mektul can seem overpowered at first, but once you understand his patterns and gimmick, defeating him becomes much easier. If you’ve struggled to take Mektul down, you will find everything you need to know in this Path of Exile 2 guide.
Where to Find Mektul, the Forgemaster

Mektul hides in the depths of the Molten Vault. You can access this area in Act 3 after draining the water preventing you from entering the Drowned City. Once you’ve unlocked the Drowned City, talk to Oswald in the encampment to get the Treasures of Utzaal quest.
This quest will send you straight to the Molten Vault to defeat Mektul, the Forgemaster.
How to Defeat Mektul, the Forgemaster

The key to defeating Mektul is to understand how he works. The Forgemaster fight is a timed boss battle. At the beginning of the fight, Mektul destroys the dam holding a flood of lava back, sending it flowing onto the battlefield.
As the battle progresses, the lava creeps forward until you have no space left and eventually succumb to Mektul, the lava, or both.
Mektul, the Forgemaster, will also retreat into the lava whenever he gets too far away from it. This empowers him, making him take less damage and deal more. The Mektul fight is more of a DPS check than anything else, and your goal is to deal enough damage to defeat him before the time runs out. That is easier said than done, however, depending on your level and build, especially when he is empowered.
When Mektul does become empowered, start slowly moving backward to lead him out of the lava. If you go too far, though, he will move back into it, so try to stay in the sweet spot about a couple of meters out of the lava to prevent him from refueling in the lava.

When he does begin to retreat into the lava, he will cease all attacks, giving you precious seconds to unleash everything you have before he gets there and becomes empowered. Once he becomes empowered by molten gold again, the status will appear underneath his name and he will start to slowly leave the lava.
This is another good chance to deal all the damage you can, although he won’t take as much when he is empowered.
Mektul is a powerful boss with a massive axe that he swings at you or smashes into the ground, dealing AoE damage. He can also leap into the air and crash back to the ground to create a massive impact zone that you can easily get caught in if you don’t dodge it fast enough.

These attacks can be tricky to escape, but the constantly ticking timer and Mektul’s empowered state are the biggest challenges to overcome in this battle. Make sure you prepare yourself with plenty of fire resistance before you take him on, and use any cold or frost moves you have, as this is Mektul’s weakness.
Any debuffs you have will also come in handy during this fight, like Wither, Armor Break, or any curses you may have. At the end of the day, any way you can make him weaker and empower yourself will help tremendously.
It is also important to note that Mektul is an optional boss. Beating him and completing the Treasures of Utzaal quest does come with rewards, but you can always come back and take him on when you’re a bit stronger if you feel you are underpowered for the task.
Mektul, the Forgemaster Rewards

Mektul, the Forgemaster, drops a series of random rewards, and, most importantly, the Hammer of Kamasa. Take the Hammer of Kamasa back to Oswald at the encampment and give it to him to complete the Treasures of Utzaal quest and unlock the Reforging Bench.
The Reforging Bench allows you to take three of the same items and combine them to create a new item with re-rolled stats. This is a great way to get rid of some of your unwanted gear or items that don’t have the best modifiers for your build.
