Malamaowl or Lajackal in Octopath Traveler 2 – Who Should You Start With?

If they're not careful Ochette will turn them into jerky

When you first begin your journey with Ochette you will be faced with a choice: do you want your cool talking animal friend to be an owl or a fox? And is there a difference? The answer is yes, there is. Here are all of the differences between Malamaowl and Lajackal in Octopath Traveler 2 and who you should pick.

Malamaowl or Lajackal in Octopath Traveler 2 – Who Should You Start With?

Ochette is, in many ways, precisely like a Pokemon trainer. She is a spunky kid tasked by a wise old guy/lion to capture powerful monsters. The only difference? Sometimes she eats those monsters. However, there is one animal she definitely will not eat, and that is her starter friend.

Ochette is presented a choice between two rare animals: Malamaowl and Lajackal. Each comes with their own unique abilities.

Malamaowl, renamed to Mahina if selected, is an owl that can attack an Elemental weak point and has access to the attack called Arcane Blade.

Lajackal, renamed to Akala if selected, offers the precise opposite ability. This jackal can attack a weapon weak point and knows the attack Finishing Blow.

The best choice will largely depend on your playstyle. Lajackal offers more damage early on but Ochette already has a wide array of weapons to choose from, making his ability to attack weapon weaknesses less effective.

Mahina does less damage but can attack an elemental weak spot, which Ochette cannot hit without being reclassed. Breaking shields is a huge part of Octopath Traveler 2, especially where bosses are concerned. For that reason, I opted for Malamaowl or Mahina.

Either way, Ochette’s buddy will have less influence as the game proceeds, and you gain access to better skills. It is better to pick the one you like the best, as that animal will always follow Ochette around when she is in the party. Additionally, the animal you do not pick will become your enemy.
